Brazil's military to airlift penguins back home

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) -- Brazil's air force and navy will transport more than 100 penguins to Antarctica next month after the flightless birds were stranded on Rio de Janeiro beaches.

Penguins arrive from the Antarctic Circle on ice floes that melt in the vicinity of Brazil's shore and the birds wash up on Rio beaches every winter. Typically many of the birds are sent to local zoos.

A plane carrying equipment for an Antarctic naval base will take the penguins to Brazil's southernmost region next month, an air force spokesman said on Monday. They will continue their journey on a naval ship, which will release them into the ocean in their Antarctic habitat.

What I find fascinating is that according to this article, penguins wash up on Rio's beaches every winter.
Can you imagine having a few too many cocktails, and going for a stroll on one of Rio's beachs only to happen upon a penguin?

That is odd!!!

But I have to add, in our Huamintarian effort to protect the earth and her species I think we go overboard. This is a natural phenomenon that happens. Why must we transport those penguins back to antarctica? Perhaps that's one of the ways that the population is controlled??? Aren't we messing with mother nature?

Just to play devil's advocate ... we spend a lot of money and resources on a lot of things to keep animals from dying (particularly humans) that in effect mess with mother nature ... with mixed results.

Maybe these penguins are the dumb ones, and we are watering down their gene pool by putting them back into the breeding stock? And as a corollary, have we already done the same for humans? I would submit virtually all daytime television as exhibit A in an argument in favor of that assertion.

Folks, if the Penguins did not have workers visas then they should damn well be sent back. Brazil does not need any more wet backs, putting a drain on their economy!!

I'm wondering if Mel Gibson has any comments on this subject.

Or...

Maybe we are also part of nature, and us flying the penguins back to Antarctica is part of Mother Nature's plan, too. ;)

Or, maybe by flying the penguins back to Antarctica, we are using and burning fuel that contributes to the global warming that causes the ice floes to break off from Antarctica that carries the penguins to Rio.

This thread is turning out better than I ever could have hoped. :D

In that case, I think Al Gore is behind it. :P
