Maybe it has something to do with the difference between players that were/are on a previous playing roster and ones that were free agents and have not yet made a roster? Just a guess, course there may not be any difference and they just use different words occasionally.

it may have to do with players previous rosters. i eliminated the possibility that they are just different words because of what i saw. for example, the team was the vikings, and they got rid of like 10 guys yesterday. so it said.....so-and-so waived, so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so, released, so-and-so waived, so-and-so waived, this guy released, and so-on-and-so-forth! sorry about the "so-and-so's".

A player who is released is just flat out gone---cut.
A player who is waived goes to the waiver list and any team can pick him up based on the waiver order. They can be picked up to regular squad or practice squad. It is kind of confusing but I think that basically if you are released it is felt you can't play in the league, and if you are waived they feel someone might snag you.
????????????????

This seems like what I was thinking also, but it was my understanding that anyone who had been on a roster or maybe it is just under contract, had to go to waivers before becoming a free agent. That is where I was kind of going with my first comment.
