Takes Enemy was unreal, and if you ask Shann Ferch he was the best player he ever played against in high school
Pretty Weasel i did not see play I am told he was the best.
Elvis Old Bull was unreal and could have played Pac-10.
There was also a 6-7 guard / forward in the mid to late 80's named Yarlot that I thought could have been a star in the Big Sky. I really liked him.
There are about 5-6 natives stars that I have such a hard time separating as to who was better.
Oh yea lets not for get JR Camel from Ronan/Hellgate
I go with, Old Elk, Pretty Weasel and Takes Enemy in no particular order.

Forgot about Jonathan Takes Enemy. He was a good one. Chavez was a "man among boys" at the "C" level. Didn't get to see him play for Browning.
JR Camel lit it up at the State AA here in Billings when they played here.

Chavez was a solid player for UM when he managed to stay out of trouble, I think he finished up last year, I'm not sure.

Old timers have told me Old Bull was the best player.

my vote is for Elvis Old Bull as well. Too bad he didn't have as productive a college career as Mike Chavez did.
Also Jr Camel did not attend Ronan High School.

Lets spit the arlee/ronan difference and go with St. Ignatis "Mission High School" He played our school I remember him dominating!! I think that his atitude and worth ethic ended his career a bit early!

From what little I remember he wanted to attend Ronan but the school board would not let him in due to some prior mishaps

sorry Msla Cat, not trying to pick on you.
Just wanted to get the facts straight. Jr may have attended Junior High in Ronan but he started high school in St.Ignatius.
In my opinion Jr Camel doesn't hold a candle to either of the Old Bull's, Chavez and many of the other names mentioned here and he should not be a considered a role model for native american basketball players (or for montana high school basketball players for that matter).

Ha!! He did attend Ronan! I did not say High school! So I was technically correct!
To be honest as far as judging any of these kids on being a role model the only one I would have insight in would be Takes Enemy. He and my ex-wife graduated from Hardin High together, so I have a little insight there. So All I was commenting on was great Native american basketball player and reconizing their pure talent on the court. it is my opinion if you came up with an honest best 10 Montana basketball player ever in Montana, at least 5 would have to be native american players, and yet we really tend to forget them unless someone asks about the best Native American players. Just pure talent.

i've heard old bull was the best but i was too little. from the basketball standpoint, and my age, i have to go with camel, conway, and chavez. i mean come on, all 3 played d-1 ball which not a lot of people can say. and why aren't these guys role models? if their not, then unfortunatly i'm not either. people make mistakes, but most learn and grow up. and despite being a cat fan, i ran into camels team a few years back in the estes tourney and not only was he great on the floor, he was a nice guy too. complimenting our team during and after the game. a great sportsman. but conway is my all-time fav...and from a bobcat standpoint, i'm glad chavez is gone. he seemed to bring a little extra every game.

Old Bull was hands down the best with Chavez second. My memory of Elvis is him outplaying everyone of the MSU team in pickup games in the off season. Unstoppable andvery fun to play with.
I never got to see Pretty Weasel or the Weeks bros.
One that hasn't been mentioned is Kenny Big Back. Played for Rocky. I think he was the one that Sports Illustrated did a story on him around 90 or 91
