Butte

Post by bozbobcat » Sun Nov 05, 2006 3:14 pm

I'll be doing my student teaching in Butte High School next semester and I've decided I don't know a whole lot about Butte. What does a young person such as myself do for fun around there? Besides for come to Bobcat games in Bozeman, which I'll try to do anyway. And does anyone know about Butte High School, what kind of school it is, what students are like? I know there are a few people with Butte connections on this board and any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Butte, Montana-

Home of the world's largest body of contaminated water; the world's largest superfund site; a 90-foot lighted statue of the Virgin Mary atop the Continental Divide; it's Pasty, not pastry. "How's she go?" is proper English; a brothel was closed as late as 1991; learned how to make beer in sophomore Montana History class; St. Patrick's Day is the biggest holiday of the year; the bouncers at the bars are high school teachers;
when the M&M closed we all cried; Driving is better in the winter because tthe potholes are filled with snow; a high of -10 is a little chilly; the sheriff
failed his firearm test; stop signs optional; even the school principles belong to a union; the high schoolers hang out at a bar at lunch; the highest concentration of radon in the valley happens to be the same place as the high school; Hell Roarin' Gulch is THE elementary school fieldtrip; the Columbia Gardens hold childhood memories, even if you were born after 1979; you could see the Travona, Mountain Con, and Anselmo mine head frames from your math class; you clarify that Judy Martz is from Rocker; every July we spend a week celebrating hometown daredevil Evel Kneivel (who robbed convenience stores when growing up in Butte ); every state politician running for election is in our Fourth of July parade; no open container law; we're the most economically depressed city in the state ranked 50th in the nation economically yet we raise $150,000 in a week to save our fireworks display on Big Butte;

Tap 'er Light.

Only thing I ever found in Butte that I could say was worth visiting. The mini lunch counter for breakfast after a night in the (at least) 10,000 bars in town was a highlight for anyone, Butte Rat or visitor. Only place I have ever been where you could get ANYTHING slathered in gravy at any time. That was a travesty when it closed.

Why is there a fence around the Lady of the Rockies????? She's the only virgin left in Butte!

Butte, Montana: City possibly on the verge of resurgance. Cheap housing (compared to Missoula or Bozeman), nearly as close to local recreational ski hills, and a city government thaht is practically giving away buildings in an effort to jump Superfund spending brings in more than scientists, this is an area on the verge.

Anyone read "The Rise of the Creative Class?" A good friend of mine read it as part of her grad school curriculum, and it argues that industry will follow people. And people will move to areas near recreation, educational opportunities, and affordable living. Butte, despite its current state, fits the model for a lot of turn around.

But I'm in biology, not economics, so don't quote me!

Close to the best ski hill in Montana (Discovery) and the best golf course in MT (Old Works). Best place for dinner and drinks - The Derby. Excellent pasta at Spaghettinis (a little pricey). Evil Knievel days rocks!!

i do remember reading in the substandard *butte paper* about a group of guys urinating off of either one of the pool tables or the bar itself/tables of the M&M :yuck:

I feel sad for you if you think the M&M is the only thing worth visiting in Butte. It may not be pretty, but its inhabitants are the proudest of their heritage, and what a heritage they have! Nobody who has ever spent much time there will ever bad mouth the place.

A huge tragedy is that the grill now closes at 10:00 p.m. instead of staying open all night.....at least the last time I visited a year ago.

when there's good snow on the backside, it IS better. lots of great expert terrain, short run-out, and short lift ride back to the top. plus, no crowds.

I decided to go back and read this forum again. I just finished my student teaching today and your suggestions were great, and they very accurately described the character of Butte. And it was fun to go to these places and eat, and St. Patty's Day wasn't all bad either. And contrary to popular belief, Butte is a great place to be. Of course, don't tell anyone that; it's our little secret. :wink:

Interesting you should bring that up. I was just in Butte this weekend for the state wrestling convention and our keynote speak for lunch on Saturday was Jim Street. He has a very large knowledge of both Montana and Butte history; which he shared with us. A part of his speech was in regards to the pride associated with coming from Butte. He spoke of several individuals who, when asked where they are from, will always say Butte regardless of where they may currently reside.
I thought this was interesting as it is one step higher in terms of pride then perhaps what I do (when I'm asked this question, my standard reply is to say that I live in Bozeman but grew up in Glasgow).

Jim said that if America is the melting pot of the world, then Butte is the "stew".

when I refrence Butte as my home city I mean that while I was growing up
we (my family and I ) would go to Butte for any provisions that were needed.

Also Butte was a great place to hunt for girls and trouble(go hand in hand) in my teenage years.

I live in Bozeman now and have lived here in the past, but I grew up in
Sheridan.

If you tell people around here that you are from Sheridan they assume
you're from wyoming.

In Butte they know me as "local" and assume I'm from Montana.
