Barry Bonds

Post by BWahlberg » Sat Dec 18, 2004 6:44 pm

I was going to remark on this on the other sports topic active right now but I am curious.

I suppose I could also add a different poll, Do you want Barry Bonds to break the home run record?

My vote would be; No.

To me knowingly taking steroids is at least as bad as what Pete Rose did.

On your other question, the thought of Barry Bonds breaking Henry Aaron's record makes me sick. So on that issue I would not only be a no but a hell no.

No question. If Rose's WILLFUL violation of baseball's rules was grounds to keep him out of the Hall, then Bonds is in PRECISELY the same boat. It's going to be entertaining (although not good for the game) to watch MLB wriggle and squirm as Bonds continues to play & "break" more records set by baseball's TRUE GREATS...

HAVE SOME CLASS FOR THE ONLY TIME IN YOUR LIFE BARRY, AND RETIRE NOW!

I would like to get BAC's opinion on this, being out in the SF area what the people out there are saying about Bonds, since most of the people sitting Pac-Bell Park don't seem to be too upset about him everytime he's up to bat.

Yeah, I'm really not going to touch this one again. I got called enough names for failing to nail him to the cross the last time the topic came up.

I can tell you that, for the most part, people around here really don't seem too concerned about it. They tend to be more outraged over political stuff (like ethical breaches and incompetence of national and world leaders) than pop culture figures. Come baseball season, we'll see if the local fans who have supposedly been so terribly abused and unloved by Barry through the years will now cease to cheer for him. I have a feeling it won't be much of a big deal by then, especially if his skills are at the same level as this last season.

As for the hall of fame? I haven't talked to anyone around here who really cares one way or another.

My vote of "Denied the Hall of Fame" is more wishful thinking than anything else.

Another interesting article. I think I'll have to start reading this magazine more often. They actually look behind the story as opposed to pitching the usual bold headlines with no substance:

First ballot even if he did it....which he did... look at the hall of fame.....a bunch of boozers, a racist in Ty Cobb, a sexual predator in Kirby Puckett...put him in there with all of them...

But being a sex predator and a racist doesn't alter your ability in the game the way being "on the juice" does.

Interesting to note that when Hank Aaron set the record, he weighed somewhere around 185 pounds. Weightlifting was discouraged becuase they thought it would slow your batspeed down.
