At least we're not afraid to step it up a notch once a year and go head-to-head with the big boys. Helps us whittle down our debt too. You guys won't even honor the home-and-home contracts you have with 1-AA schools if it looks like they're going to be good (See Cal Poly and Hofstra) - because Baby Huck doesn't want to risk the loss. So you pay them $50,000 to stand them up, and then pay the helgate whiffle-ball club to come and take a beating from the bullies, while 18,000 paying bandwagonners look on...

Pat yourselves on the back as much as you want for not being afraid to go to stillwater and take a pounding, but keep this in mind: The Griz will generate more revenue from each of the two cupcake games on their schedule than the Cats will generate from their bodybag OSU game. The Griz ain't afraid to play anyone, it's just that these teams don't offer a big enough paycheck to make it worth our while. I admit, I'm envious of your schedule. I would like to see us play a BCS school and see how we match up, but until the debt it payed off, we'll have to settle for playing whomever is willing to come to Missoula.

No they won't. I've seen the eGriz estimates of what you guys think the friz make on every home game, and it's laughable. If that were the case and you guys made $600000 net on every home game then I don't think a $900000 debt would have made as big as an impact on your program that it did. The 'Cats draw over half of what the griz draw, but I don't see anything close to $250000 rolling into our coffers after every home game.

It's b.s... just like when you guys claim that Pac-10 schools are afraid to play the Griz, so they (the Pac-10 schools) purposely offer low paying games knowing UM will turn them down... puh-lease. At least people around the country are starting to pick up on how dingy Griz fans are... The more exposure they get, the bigger their ego becomes, and the more fans get fed up with 'em. Now thats Griz Envy!

Okay, why don't you explain it for me? Keep it specific to this example, because I'm interested in seeing how your numbers add up.

I would like to see the numbers on that as well from both MSU/UM. MSU's numbers should be continuing to climb though which is a good sign. 2nd highest attendance ever last year and it will be broken this year as well. I also find it very hard to believe if the Griz pull in 600,000 a game that they cannot make a profit from it/travel to other 'away' teams for non conference games. This from the premier FOOTBALL 1-AA in the nation? I think its a little embarrassing myself.

Who came up with the 600 thousand mark? Ive' heard 450 a number of times, but Gross and Net are a different ball game.

600 thousand is gross, I'm curious what the net is as well.

bearbac: How hard is it to figure out the gross?? 23,000 butts in the seats at $25-$30 per ticket (don't the griz games cost $30?) gives $575,000 to $690,000. As noted, the more interesting question is how much the griz net from each game. Even if only $100,000 per game, they should have their debt paid off pretty quickly, so I assume they are not even clearing that? So then, explain why a $250,000 game with a Division 1 school does not pay?

This is interesting. Bareback, please explain what you think "overhead" is and how it plays into this discussion. Aren't overhead costs items that exist regardless of whether a game is played or not, and therefore have absolutely no impact on a discussion of home vs. road games?

I saw an article in the Missoulian over a year ago where your AD said that the Griz made about $250K per home game. I don't know if that was gross or net. I was under the impression it was gross.

MSU spends about $60K for an away football game. This varies by how many nights they are on the road.

bearback is just ashamed that the U cant play anyone of the caliber of OSU, even though we will get waxed during that game, it will be good for our schedule becasue it will prepair us for the rest of the year.

I just hope the game isnt that bad
