Durham Lands a Highschool point guard.

Post by mslacat » Wed May 19, 2004 3:18 pm

I think this is a real good get for the Cats. I really, really like what Durham can do with good highschool point gaurds. Can anyone name one that did not pan out? This guy is a true big point for Big Sky standards plus he can score. We have recruited so many utlity players in recent years that i really wanted to see some people who can and would put up some good numbers. I do not know if he will play or redshirt but it is real nice to get another point guard on scholarship where we have been real thin.

From MSU:
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Ryan Holmes, the leading high school
basketball scorer in Arizona last season, has signed a National
Letter-of-Intent to join the Montana State men's basketball program next
fall, MSU coach Mick Durham announced Wednesday.
Holmes, 6-1, 185 lbs, was an all-state guard at Millennium High,
and was a two-time all-conference selection. The four-year starter
averaged 29.3 points to lead the state's prep athletes last season, and
also logged seven assists, 6.5 rebounds, and four steals per outing.
"Ryan is a kid with a great knack for scoring," Durham said,
"and he can score in a variety of ways. When I watched him on tape I
expected that all he would be able to do was score, but he's a very
unselfish player who is also very strong and defends well. He's a
well-rounded player, and I'm excited to get a young guard of his caliber
in our program."
Millennium coach Tim Butler also lauds Holmes as a versatile
player. "Ryan ran the point for us and also played the two guard,"
Butler said. "He's just an overall leader, extremely quick, with a knack
for the ball. He is a good, solid defender, and is just a solid
all-around basketball player. Ryan is such a good kid, I love him and
his family. He'll do a great job at Montana State."
Holmes joins junior college guards Ja'Ron Jefferson and Branden
Miller, along with three frontline players, as MSU's signees for the
2004-05 season...

29 points a game. Pure scorer baby! I wonder if they will red shirt him or not. Our backcourt should be really good/deep next year.

He is a prime canidate to be redshirted., but Brown is the only true point guard underscholarship besides him. Someone described Miller as more of a point guard who can play the off guard and Jefferson as more of off guard who can play the point. Plus with Casey Durham coming off a redshirt year that may allow Durham the luxury of redshirting him. On the other hand 29 points a game speaks alot and I would mind it one bit if he came in and gave Miller, Durham and Jefferson a challange for playing time! Compitition baby make-um earn it.

ALthough most pure scorers don't also average: 7 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and four steals per outing. Those are Jason Kidd numbers. Sounds like an awesome pickup for the CATS!

Now on this board is Jason Kidd one step above or one step below Jason Erickson?

Wow... I realize Arizona isn't a big state population-wise but I'm surprised we were able to get their leading HS scorer this late. Nice to sign at least one HS player to go with all the JC guys.

I put Kidd a level below Erickson due to Kidd's annoying wife.

While I am very enthusiastic about this signing, one has to wonder why he hasn't been signed thus far. There must be some major knock on him, or as with most of the major athletes in AZ, he would have been signed by one of the big guys by now.

Things are looking good. I'm kind of disappointed about Morales. He had potential with his athleticism.

BigTime, that sounds pretty defeatist. " He can not be any good because we signed him! There is a lot about him on the net. Insiders have him rated as a two star athlete and the number 31st point gaurd in the west. I was curiuos also so here is some of what I found:

May 3, 2002 Rivals

Ryan Holmes, a two year starting point guard for Millennium High School in Arizona, has impressed many over the past two years in Arizona with his early maturation as a high school point guard.

As a sophomore this past season, Holmes continued his progression in a big way, being selected as Millennium's Offensive Player of the Year and Team Captain, and was selected to the West Valley Region First Team. This season Holmes also was selected to the All-Tournament Team for the Dysart High School Demon Classic Tournament, and was also selected for the All-Tournament Team for the Greenway High School Winter Classic Tournament.

Holmes averaged 19 points per game this season to go along with nine assists and six steals. Ryan also holds the Millennium High School All-Time steals record with 13 steals in a single game.

As a freshman, Holmes was a member of the West Valley All Region Academic Team, was awarded West Valley Region Honorable Mention, was honored as the Freshman of the Year for Milliennium, Defensive Player of the Year, and was also the leading scorer and a member of the 2000 Arizona State AAU Championship Team while playing for the Arizona Stars.

Holmes is a cat-like quick guard with good instincts and a good feel for the game. He as the ability to penetrate and push the ball up the floor are his strong suits now.

Holmes travels with the Arizona Pump N' Run team. He also is a Member of the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), and runs track for Millennium HS, all while carying a 3.8 GPA.

Holmes is rated as the top sophomore in Arizona by our affiliate, Arizona Preps.

The state of Arizona isn’t loaded with an overwhelming amount of Division 1 talent, but they do have several prospects to keep an eye on this recruiting campaign.

Ryan Holmes, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound point guard from Millennium High School in Goodyear, Arizona, is the No. 1 player in the state and is getting quite a few looks from high major schools.

“Right now, Colorado State, Gonzaga, Santa Clara and Utah are some of the schools showing the most interest,” Holmes said. “I plan on taking all five official visits, but anything can happen.”

The point guard position has changed quite a bit over the last few years. The days of a point guard being strictly an assist man are over, as many of the nation’s top floor generals are looking to score, too.

Holmes averaged 20 points and six assists during his junior campaign.

“I can push the ball up the court, I can hit the midrange jump shot, I can get my teammates involved, I create a lot of steals and just play solid defense.”

We’ve seen a lot of players make early commitments, which allows them to focus on summer basketball and, in the process, makes their senior year of basketball more enjoyable. It appears that Holmes isn’t interested in taking that route.

“I’m not really in a big hurry to make a decision,” he said. “I would say that a decision will be made before the start of my senior year of basketball, but I don’t see a decision being made before that.

“Right now, I’m just working out with a trainer and getting ready for this summer,” he added. “I’ll be traveling with my Arizona Stars AAU team, which plays on the Nike circuit.”

Ryan Holmes Profile

Ryan Holmes, 6-0 SR PG, Goodyear (Ariz.) Millenium, is getting interest from a variety of schools across the country.

Holmes is hearing mostly from Santa Clara, Utah, University of Chicago-Illinois, Akron, Portland State, San Diego State, Columbia, and Princeton.

He did indicate that his two favorites at the moment were Santa Clara and Utah, and planned to take official visits to both this fall. The Holmes family said that Santa Clara is arranging for an in-home visit also this month.

Ryan Holmes, one of the better junior point guards in Arizona, gives us an update on his recruitment...

Ryan Holmes, 6-1 JR PG Goodyear (Ariz.) Millenium, told us yesterday that Colorado State, UConn and New Mexico are among the schools he's hearing from at this point in his recruitment.

Holmes told us that he's open to leaving the west. "Location isn't really a factor," said Holmes. "It'd be nice to stay close, but it's not a real issue."

We asked Holmes for his thoughts on the issues he'd consider when making his choice. "Education," said Holmes. "That and how the team is doing. Also, I'm interested in being an orthodontist, so how they are in that."

Holmes listed North Carolina as his dream school when he was younger. "Because of guys like Jordan and Vince Carter," said Holmes.

Holmes isn't sure when he'll make a decision. "I've been thinking about it and I don't know," said Holmes. "It could be in the fall or the spring next year."

Holmes told us that he has a 3.7 GPA and he'll take the ACT on April 12th.

A couple opinions on Ryan Game
He's an effortless scorer who can hurt you from ANY point on the floor. He's smooth as silk when he's in a groove and can put up 20-25 pts. almost silently.......not a showboatter so you don't really notice the numbers until you read the box score.

He can play both guard positions, but I didn't see him enough to say he's a pure point guard.......from what I did see, I'd have to question whether he has the explosive quickness required of a top notch PG.

Holmes will be more effective at the next level as a point guard, but at Millenium he showed that he has the scorer's mentality required to play the 2. His quickness laterally may hurt him defensively at the next level, but when taking the ball to the basket Holmes is quick enough, and more importantly uses his body well. He is stronger than he looks, particularly his lower body, which helps him defend larger opponents in the post. An excellent signing for MSU
