Spoelsrta left Bozeman under her own power. She was not forced out, she moved up to the next level! I do remember a bunch of shHelcat72 wrote:Does anyone remember the "controversy" with Spoelstra when she was here? I agree she would probably be a good coach if "attitudes" have changed in

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, I really doubt it would be an issue, especially since subsequent MSU coaches have been in the same situation. Bozeman isn't that backwards, especially now.
I tend to agree the real question is whether she would be interested in returning to a job that she left for a better one ten years ago. That's a step down in prestige and money... although right now she is unemployed, so anything is a step up.

To set the record: Judy Spoelstra's best season at Montana State was during the 1992-93 season, when the Bobcats defeated Montana for the Big Sky tournament title to earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAAs-- where they faced Washington. Her record that season was 22-7 and 13-1 in Big Sky play. During her tenure at MSU she was 98-68, with one title, one runner-up finish, three thirds and a fourth (in her first season). Thanks for the info, Sports info. Statistically speaking, can you tell us when the applications deadline was for the Womans head coaching possition.MSU Sports Info wrote:To set the record: Judy Spoelstra's best season at Montana State was during the 1992-93 season, when the Bobcats defeated Montana for the Big Sky tournament title to earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAAs-- where they faced Washington. I AM OFFICIALLY EMBARRASSED
Are we so far down the food chain in Division 1 sports that our athletic director does not have a short list and he actually spends time and expends the effort sifting through resumes and calling references? Lord, we ARE podunk
Even at the high school level, coaches and administrators get a phone call in the evening asking if they'd be interested in an open position...

I assume there is an official application period for legal reasons. The evening calls probably do take place, but there has to at least be the appearance of a fair and open application process. Nobody is saying that every application/resume will be reviewed and/or interviewed, though (just like any job -- by the way, anyone know of any good intl. tax managers out there? We're interviewing... if we like your resume and especially if we know of you through our networking).Cat Grad wrote:I AM OFFICIALLY EMBARRASSEDAre we so far down the food chain in Division 1 sports that our athletic director does not have a short list and he actually spends time and expends the effort sifting through resumes and calling references? As for the references, given our success in the past, I really DO hope that we are calling as many references as we can before we make ANY hire. Unfortunately, there are probably a lot of questions that either can't be asked or answered for employment law reasons.

The out box on this message board is not like a typical "Outlook" outbox. the message never really leaves a computer and goes to another computer. It stays in your "outbox" until the person who You sent it to opens it. By the same token you can tell right away if someone has looked at you message at any time!! I just discovered this the other day!!Cat Grad wrote:BAC: sent you the names and phone numbers of a couple of buddies in your private message. Takes a real looonnnnggg time for them to get out of the sent box here, for some reason. They'll probably show up tomorrow. Give them a call, they're both at the top of what you'd expect.

Sometimes, it's really hard to understand our "institutional" leadership (and why some of them shouldn't be institutionized). Usually, I want to reach out and touch Kusek, though this time he's correct. I would venture to guess the trepidation coming out of Fields right now has more to do with the obvious status of several returning players future and a possible shortfall in athletic department contributions were some of the scholarships pulled :-&

I agree about Kusek, usually he has no idea what he is talking about. This was a well-written and well-researched article, though. He is also correct - MSU needs to get on the ball and make a decision, whatever that decision may be. I don't know enough about women's basketball or our team to form an educated opinion about whether Kudrna is the right guy for the job. But I do know that he deserves to know if he has a job or not. So do our current players and our recruits. Greg definitely didn't show a great ability to win games this year with lesser talent, but no doubt he was severely handicapped with what he had to work with. You can't hire him just because he is a nice guy, though - if they hire him, it has to be because they think he is the best-qualified individual to coach this team back to the success we had been having. We don't want to have to go through this thing again in three years, and I would guess that is why MSU is taking so long. I have heard a couple very, very interesting rumors about this position, so we'll see what happens. Sorry guys, can't pass along the rumors as I promised they would be kept quiet - but trust me, one of these is a bigtime rumor that would cause serious reverberations throughout the Big Sky.

Huh? Shannon Cate is going to be next women's basketball coach at MSU??? Did I hear that correctly?? How these rumor's get started is beyond me.
