Opening session and reading from the Quran!

I can see it now. Before the National Assembly has an opportunity to form their government, the ACLU will be over there arguing for the separation of Church and State 1988 was the first mass killing chemical attack after the end of WWII. Would anyone call gas a weapon of mass destruction? How many gas filled warheads did we find after the liberation?

If only the ACLU had the power to do that in every country in the world... wouldn't it be great? No more government sanctioned religious wars or genocides? Only in the U.S. are we so spoiled with freedom that we can actually scorn groups that work to advance civil liberties as being "too liberal." We are one of the most liberal nations on earth, and we have been since our founding, and that's what makes us great.Cat Grad wrote:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7189847/

I'm actually quite sure every conservative in the country would love for Iraq to get a little church/state separation, along with the rest of the Middle East. In fact, an Iraqi version of the ACLU would be a darling in our collective eyes -- we're probably funding the creation of something like that over there with our tax dollars right now. We're not all that fond of governments promoting/imposing Islam, so I'm told. Ironic, isn't it?

As I've spent so many years in the Army and teaching, I'd never let anyone know what lever I flip in the booth nor would I ever get into a discussion with either a "true" liberal or conservative Speak of irony; ask a liberal if there's ever been a more liberal president than Richard Nixon and watch them gulp. Ended the draft. Fought for a got voting rights for 18 year olds. Gave 18 year olds the right to drink. Opened the door to Communist China. Got us out of Viet Nam. Founded the EPA...Then, ask a conservative which one was more conservative: Franklin Roosevelt or Bill Clinton...

Perhaps I should have said "I certainly hope" that every conservative.... I guess I was just assuming that every conservative was against the idea of a nation that actively promoted terrorism against the U.S., and then made the logical leap that they would also be in favor of something that would prevent that. I guess I could be wrong. Please enlighten me if so.OZCAT wrote:Bay Area Cat-
How is it that you know what every conservative in America is thinking?
Many conservatives surprise me in their positions these days, so I guess nothing would shock me. After all, the Republicans in Congress are the party of the expansive reach of the federal government and the limitation of states' rights, so who's to say what's next?

In the context of what I posted, everything. How many theocracies in the world right now, especially those that are Islamic, do NOT support terrorism in one way or another?OZCAT wrote:What does church/state separation have to do with a country that actively promotes terrorism?
We're very lucky to have the separation that we have here. Without it, we could have well turned into a freakshow of irrationality and restriction of freedoms (based on the interpretation of a few government officials of the words of ancient dead guys who claimed to talk to a god) like Iran or Saudi Arabia.
We clearly want a separation of church and state in every democracy we set up -- otherwise it won't be a democracy for long. Democracy and government imposed religion don't mix well at all.
