Missoula Sentinel Coaches

Post by BleedsBlue&Gold » Thu Apr 07, 2005 9:38 am

FB Coach Lyons announced to the players in the locker room after their last game that he would NOT be back. However, there has never been a formal resignation. School AD has indicated they are looking for a new head coach, but is waiting to see what teaching positions will be open.
In the mean while everyother team in the state with a head coach is getting further ahead in the weightroom.
Rumors for replacment include Lebsock from Billings Skyview, I have heard yes and no a million times with this one.
Craig Matosich is another rumor.
Anybody else hear anything?

I also heard today that Boys BB coach Joe Fisher is going to resign as well.
He has had fairly successfull tenure has head coach. I think he only missed State tourney one year. Unfortunatley, he has consistintly failed to meet the expectations that people seem to have for the talent that he had to work with. With the Henkles, both Hasquets, Morris, and others, many felt they should have won some state titles.

I've heard of a non-teacher who is interested in the Head FB position. He's heavily involved in LL and Little Griz.

I haven't heard of anyone else officially.

I also heard "downtown talk" of combining Hellgate and Sentinel in some creative way...i.e., have a math/science basis at Sentinel and Art/Music basis at Hellgate...The kids would all compete for the combined HS, however...I just can't see that happening in my lifetime.

Is it Hermes?

I have also heard of the possible combining of the schools. I just don't think it seems realistic at all. I don't know if I even like the idea.

I think the real issue that needs to be fixed first is the school boundries. If they would actually set some boundries and get some kids from Big Sky into Sentinel/Hellgate, I think they would all be fine.

Is it a former Bobcat who recently moved his business from Reserve to SW Higgins? I think he would make a great coach, and get that program going in the right direction.

Are non-teachers allowed to coach, or is it a budget issue?

No, he's not the one I was talking about, but I agree, he might be a good choice. Actually, there are about 5 or 6 x-Cats that would make a good staff. Maybe I'll mention that to some folks, and perhaps with enough political support, things could possibly change. The Superintendant, from what I've heard, won't consider a non-teacher for the HC position, although non-teachers can be assistants.

To tell you how bad things are, the head JV coach last year was a 19-yr old who had just graduated the previous year from Sentinel...I mean, I like the kid, and I know his papa well and like/respect him a bunch, too, but there's just no way this kid was qualified to be a HC at that level...I can't believe Missoula County High Schools can't find qualified people to coach at Sentinel.

Has anyone else heard anything about Fisher resigning from basketball?

I saw that. I am pretty surprise.
Matosich was mentioned as a possible replacement. That is interesting. I also heard he was in the running for the new FB coach.

Any word yet? I don't even know if they have posted them.
They need to get them filled ASAP! Esp the FB job. The new coach will have only 3 months to get a new staff, system, and the players ready.

Matosich got the BB job. I have mixed feelings about this. the AD, whaley, posted the job 3 days, then closed it with only 3 canidates. I think Mato will do fine, I think they could have done alot better though.

Still no word on the FB job.

I read that the new FB coach was hired.

Pete Joseph. Young guy 31, no head coaching experience. I think his assistant coaches will be critical.

The thing I liked most about the hire was the perception that he has a ton of energy. I hope he's got enough to tell the vocal parents to shut up and let him do his job. While I agreed with much of the criticism of the former coach, I'm hoping that the parents will now take a rest and let things take there own course.

He really has an opportunity to build a good program. There are some great athletes in Washington Middle School right now, and more on the way. They will be making a choice between Sentinel and Hellgate - ironically, 2 of the middle schoolers I know from the same neighborhood are leaning different ways. One, who likes FB, has Hellgate on his mind, the other, a non-FB player is leaning toward Sentinel.
