Sheesh, should I even bother making the myriad of corrections necessary to right all the misinformation in BearBrained's post??? Okay, but just because I have to right the record for Bobcat history's sake...
MSU has won 3 National Championships in football, at 3 different levels. The Cats won the 1956 NAIA championship, by vote of the press. Yes, they tied in the "championship game," but they were voted to be the best team. For anyone who recognizes USC as national champs this year, that is pretty much the same thing. Call it whatever you want, but MSU is the only school with the NC trophy for that year. The second championship was the 1976 Division II chipper. The third championship was the 1984 Division I-AA title (somehow, that was "decades" ago, apparently).
MSU is 2-0-1 in championship tilts, which certainly beats the hell out of the grizzlies' dismal 2-3 record (not to say I wouldn't be happy with 5 attempts in 10 years, though).

Win or lose, I am thrilled that the Grizzlies have been in 5 of the last 10 Division I-AA championships.hokeyfine wrote:so their actual record is 2-5.
Thrilled that they've set the record for most consecutive playoff appearences at 13.
Won or shared each Big Sky title except one since 1993.
Compared to three national titles that haven't been obtain in decades, 21 years is two decades bozone.
And three Big Sky titles since 1984 -- two of which were shared with "the other team"
Remind me who has the overall record?
Now that's comparison................................
And the string of angry replies begins in
5
4
3
2
.........

Nick: everything is cyclical. we used to say the same thing about the griz in the 80's. griz football has generally only been a power since the big three(idaho, bsu, nevada) have left. the only big sky title they had with these 3 was a tie with idaho in 1982. they were promptly beat by idaho in the first round. remember the griz have 1 more big sky title than the cats. i like your youthful enthusiasm, next year you get to hate the beavers.

Actually they have 2 more BSC titles than the Cats (13-11), not that it's a big difference. I know prior to 15 years ago it wasn't the same, but recent history defines where a program is at. In that case it has been 10-2 UM with both of MSU's titles shared with the Griz.hokeyfine wrote:Nick: everything is cyclical. we used to say the same thing about the griz in the 80's. griz football has generally only been a power since the big three(idaho, bsu, nevada) have left. the only big sky title they had with these 3 was a tie with idaho in 1982. they were promptly beat by idaho in the first round. remember the griz have 1 more big sky title than the cats. i like your youthful enthusiasm, next year you get to hate the beavers.
I have to say the Griz weren't so much a power before Nevada left but they won the BSC title the last three consecutive years that BSU and Idaho were in.
I don't think I'll really hate the Beavers -- the Huskies and Bobcats. Since their colors are close that will be easy

I'll still be rooting for the Griz at Autzen September 10th.

Nick: close....they won in 93 and 95. prior to those two years they would scratch and claw but couldn't get past all three. "recent history defines where a program is at"
errr, that kind of goes without saying on most things? i feel great today so i hope that's where i'm at. i drove my car to work and it ran fine, doesn't mean that the engine won't blow up on the way home.

I guess I didn't say that very clearly. Take for instance Montana State -- won a few titles back in the day and a couple co titles in the last few years. Back in the day MSU was clearly the stronger program, but where the teams sit now Montana has had much more success and they are currently the stronger program. Montana is now at the tradition of championships year after year where MSU is excited to get over .500 and get a spot in the top three. I am sure it was opposite 25 years ago -- but that really has no bearing on today because it has been overshadowed by MSU's lackluster success in the past 15-20 years.hokeyfine wrote:Nick: close....they won in 93 and 95. prior to those two years they would scratch and claw but couldn't get past all three. i understood what you were trying to say nick
i was funnin you on your general comment of "recent history defines where a program is at" it's like saying wherever your at, there you are. classic line from the brady bunch movie. what you need to say is um is having(not had) much more success. if you say had, then your implying(which i think you are
) that the history of griz football is better than the history of cat football, which is subjective and another thread. again, i like your youthful enthusiasm, i can remember similar comments by cat fans in the 70's and early 80's.

I like to look at it as the Griz winning 8 of the last 10 or 3 of the last 5 but I guess we all have to be optimistscatatac wrote:Agreed - but many of the Bobcat faithful feel the momentum shifting once again. I actually do cheer for the Cats when they are not playing the Griz. The only time I root against them other than Griz-Cat is if it puts UM in a better position in the Big Sky race (ex. Sac State).

It's always enjoyable to listen to cat fans twist this into an even and competetive rivalry. Oh how we rationalize in our own minds!!
"How many national titles have we each won, blah, blah, blah"
This is not a competetive rivalry, and hasn't been since 1985 (20 years!!). I wouldn't exactly categorize that as recent history.
How many rivalries (Mich vs. Ohio St., Miami vs. FSU, etc) do you see an 18-2 record over the last 20 year????? Not very many.

It may not be an even rivalry, but it most definitley is a competitive one. I guarantee you every player on the Cat's football teams in the last 20 yrs played their guts out in that game. Sure, they may not have won a whole lot, but the fact remains that it is and forever will be a competitive rivalry, and it is again on track to be an even rivalry.DaddyGriz wrote:It's always enjoyable to listen to cat fans twist this into an even and competetive rivalry. BTW, Vandy and Tennessee is a rivalry, but Vandy always gets their A$$es handed to them on the field, and Notre Dame hasn't beaten USC in a while.
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.
