I never enter into these stupid "screen name/signature line" bets for exactly this reason, but here's what I think.
The original bet was never very well-defined. Crazycat said "let's bet screen names," but wtf does that mean? I would take it to mean not that the loser has to quit posting, but that the loser keeps posting, and the winner gets to choose the loser's new screen name. If that was the bet, then it would seem to me that letting the loser keep his screen name, but making him change his signature line, is a reasonable substitute, although it probably should've been spelled out a little better from the start.
No matter how you look at it, it was crazycat's mouthing off about how good the Cats were (and how bad the Griz were) that led to this bet, and he lost. If he wants to quit posting, of course that's his right; nobody can force him to keep posting. Like I said, this is exactly why I never do these stupid bets -- if I'm going to bet, it's always for either booze, steak dinners, or cold hard $$$, because these "screen name"-type bets are too easy to weasel out of.
I work as an attorney so that I can afford good scotch, which helps me to forget that I work as an attorney.
