Cats across the century
I always find the frequent comments in Bobcat Nation about how supposedly “the Grizzly football program didn’t begin until the 1990’s” to be very amusing.
The overall record in Griz-Cat head-to-head football match-ups is 68 Griz wins, 35 Cat wins, and 5 ties.
In fact, you have to go all the way back to 1910 to find the last time the series was tied (at 7 games a piece), after which the Grizzles went ahead and have never looked back.
Here’s a link to the records and facts.

Re: Cats across the century
I don't think UM and MSU were really on a level playing field until 1964? when they both joined the Big Sky. I don't know that they were ever in the same conference until then. Wasn't UM in the same conference as UCLA, Washington and USC? MSU was in the NAIA for a period of time and I don't know that UM ever was. I also think football was only a Club sport, like lacrosse and rodeo, so there may not have been a rulebook to follow to keep things even. Just a couple things to consider, but it'd be interesting to sort all of that out and put those numbers in perspective. It's kind of like Yale being the most dominant football team of all time because they've won the most college football championships (18) even though they haven't won one since 1927 and there were only about 10 teams for the first 30 years of their run or something like that. Go Yale! Princeton is No. 2. If those two teams suddenly get good again do we harken back to their records from long ago? But, to avoid a long drawn out argument about this, technically UM has a big edge over MSU in the all-time series.Griznationalist wrote:I always find the frequent comments in Bobcat Nation about how supposedly “the Grizzly football program didn’t begin until the 1990’s” to be very amusing.

I say this for fun, but UM used to be MSU, so all those victories as MSU should transfer over to Bozeman.
I don't hate the Griz, but I do hate it when people, who aren't visually impaired, post in large print and in colors.

Re: Cats across the century
Points well taken. So if the Grizzlies used to be in the same conference with USC, UCLA, Washington, etc., and MSU didn't join the same conference as the Grizzlies until 1964, and if the Grizzlies took the lead in the head-to-head Griz-Cat record in 1910 and never relinquished it, and the Grizzlies lead overall 68-35-5, what is the basis for the assertion that "the Grizzlies didn't have a football program until the 1990's"?????????

Re: Cats across the century
I have no idea what that means. I've never heard or read that. I've heard a lot of people say that it was never a program of prominence until Don Read got them rolling, which was right around 1990.
Here's a little material for you to use to build your case that UM did in fact exist before 1990. UM did have a couple good teams around 1970 and went to the Camelia Bowl, so they were prominent at that time. They also went to the I-AA playoffs in 1982, so that was a pretty good team, too. So looks like you've proved everyone that ever made the assertion about UM not having a team before 1990 to be wrong.
Thanks for not using the big, colored letters.

It would be nice if you could put your lame attempts at smack in the proper section of the forum, or are you too dense to figure that out?

I think that's abundantly clear.

seriously Griznationalist did you get kicked off of egriz or something? These are the reasons Bobcat Fans hate the griz, always thinking people want to hear about the griz, or complaining about this and bragging about this, just wear stupid pink colors and stay on your own message board.

And yet, what you FAIL TO MENTION is that the Cats have won MORE NATIONAL TITLES than the fizzles. Did your crack research crew miss that little tid-bit when digging up "records and facts"?

Re: Cats across the century
We addressed it in another thread. Tomcat88 (Stuber) pointed out that you can't compare the records of the two schools because the Bobcats were playing in NAIA until 1964, while the Grizzlies were in the PAC of its day along with UCLA, USC, Washington, etc. I don't really count little-guy football championships (NAIA), otherwise we'd be comparing Griz and Cat records to Carroll, Rocky Mountain College, etc. You guys can brag about all the NAIA championships you want, even the one in '56 where the Cats got shut out (didn't score a point) in the champioinship game. I won't dispute it or begrudge it.SenorWeezer wrote:griznatinoalist wrote: "I always find the frequent comments in Bobcat Nation about how supposedly “the Grizzly football program didn’t begin until the 1990’s” to be very amusing.

uh...it's CAT-fiz. Everyone knows that. This is a clear case of CAT envy. It's a hard thing for a fiz fan to see. Give him a break.
