Track team splits this weekend

Some will go to a series of three meets in California (Azusa Pacific, Mt SAC, Long Beach), the rest to Missoula for an unscored meet. We'll meet very tough competition in California, especially at Mt SAC. Big meet experience is invaluable.

Lifetime bests yesterday for two throwers. Casey Clausen 159-3 hammer. Amanda Murphy 176-0 hammer. Alli Jones got a seasons best of 174-2. Today gets busy as we compete at two meets, some going back and forth in the field events. Conditions are perfect. The rest of our team competes in Missoula Saturday.

mc, maybe I should pm you on this, but my oldest daughter (6th grade) just signed up for Middle School track. Unfortunately for her, she is built more like her Daddy and not her Mommy. So it's a good thing that she wants to throw the shot and the javelin.
Besides telling her Daddy not to be as crazy at her track meets as he is at Bobcat FB games , any tips on helping her? encouraging her?

Any open scholarships for Women's throws in about 6 years?

A thrower's physique is a gift. Mesomorphs rule. There's a lot of info on technique available, especially online. MSU hosts a track camp for ages 13-18. General advice is be an athlete first, thrower second. Strive for overall fitness, control the bodyweight. Pour sweat daily. Live the way you feel when you hear your favorite song. Mastery takes fascination with technique. Great rewards, mostly personal. I love to talk about this, but I have to get up soon (3:30). Lights out for now.

I will likely be retired when she graduates from high school. But a scholarship is a great goal, unless it becomes the primary one. The archer that shoots for a gold coin sees two targets. The archer that shoots for love of archery never misses.

I think this is great advice for anyone to live by Coach. Very inspirational and worth quoting for anyone giving a speech on a relatable subject, athletic or not.

It seems that MSU has always been very good in the throwing events and distance running (at least some years). Why not in the sprints. Yes, Dan Johnson is a very good 400 meter guy but when was the last time we had a 100m and/or a 200m champion?

Hinzpeter won the 100 for our women in 2003, and Heberly the 200 for the men in 2005. I think coach Kennedy and assistant Griffith really know what they are doing, and develop potential in sprinters. Johnson is the proof of that. But so much of team building is recruiting. There isn't a lot of speed in Montana, and when there is among the boys, it usually goes to a football team. It is hard to recruit against football, with hundreds of scholarships in Montana for football, but few for track. Distance runners are more available, and a better bargain. They are easier to find up here, tend to get better every year, and participate in three sports, cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Some track teams in the BSC feature a lot of their football talent, a big advantage. We survive by developing technical skill. The first BSC 18' vault for men, and 14' for women came from MSU, also the first 200' hammer and discus. But it's not that we don't care about the sprints, or know how to coach them.
