Post by newcat » Mon Jun 06, 2005 9:04 am

I know camp does not start for a couple months and we still do not know about the improvements each players has made over the summer (including the new guys) and how the spring injuries will effect the team but i was just wondering who do you guys think the starters will be once they step into Stillwater?

Just a guess:
Offense
Tackes Jensen, Hirst
Guards Bolton, Figeroa
Center Birkeland
QB Who else?
TE Barnhart
RB Dominick
WR Gatewood, Guinn & Murray

Defense
NT Saucedo
DT Rogers, Kolone
OLB Lowe, King
ILB Mollohan, Marudas
CB Smith, Hunter
SS Force
FS Grenfell

Of course this depends on injuries and things I just don't know. Especially with the DL and DB's, but I think it is close.

GO CATS!!

I didn't see any spring action by the team, but based on the comments here, everyone seemed fairly impressed with ALL our running backs (although Bass was not there).

Based on what you all have seen/heard, what do you feel are the chances that JD will be our starting TB by the time we hit conference games?

I have not seen Bass yet, so he could be a wild card and change things. But based on last spring, JD will be our starter. He lost 10-15 pounds and looked much quicker. I also don't remember him fumbling any of the scrimmages I saw. The freshman Evan Groves should also see some action though, especially since JD does have an asthma or allergy situation. Groves looks like he could be the real deal and getting him some game experience should help.

Unless we have some injuries or he is moved to a fullback position, I don't expect to see Gathing a lot. Not to say that he is not good, but I was just a bit more impressed with JD and Groves. Gathing is a huge impact player on special teams though and would be a solid RB if needed.

I hope Kramer gives Groves a chance to show us what he's got. Why not spell JD for a couple 2-3 series in the 2nd Q or late 3rd? Getting that frosh meaningful gametime experience would go a long way.

Is King really slated to play an inside position? He played the outside last year and is the fastest LB. I would think he would be on the outside and Marudas moved inside. Just a thought.

he's FAST, but I think he's also become a monster in the weight room.

CatPride: The QB isn't Houdini (Joe Montana), it's Houdini (Brett Favre). Houdini (Joe Montana) plays for Carroll College.

About Epi King...If you have LB's who can cover the flat already playing OLB, why not take your quickest kid, put him in the middle and let him cover the whole field. To go along with his speed, he has a well developed sense for the ball and can hit as hard or harder than anyone you can put up on this forum...past or present. His a little bit light at 205 but given his families stature and the summer weight program he'll get there.

Keep in mind that he'll be a redshirt sophomore and will make those young kid mistakes, but I guarantee that you will enjoy watching him over the next three years.

I know the kicker and punter position are one of the least popular, but are one of the most important, and games are often won or lost by either the kicker and/or the punter... with that being said, any idea on if the kicking duties will be Tyler Bolton's or if the freshman Fisher from Billings will have a chance??

I'm sure Kramer is reluctant to have a freshman kicker, but UM did it with some success with Carpenter.

If he is really physical, the speed will be a plus, however I would like to see two physical middle backers to stuff the run on the goal line. It appeared to me that we were less physical than most on goalline situations last year. Maybe the bigger linemen will help and maybe they go to four down linemen on goal line, but we have had some big physical middle backers at MSU that could really make that last two yards difficult. I would like to see it again. Mollohan is physical if not big....I'm not sure who is more physical Marudas or King, but I believe speed on the outside is put to better use.

Three of the four projected LBs are 210 to 220. Only Lowe is 240 and he is projected as outside I believe because of coming from DE. The problem brought up several months ago is we have lighter LBs, thus unless the DL plays physical and keeps the OL off our LBs, they will wear down because they are not big guys. The 3-4 will be keyed by the DL play, which we'll have to see. The speed in the middle will actually not be wasted, if the LBs are kept clean, a fast guy in the middle can cover a lot of the field chasing down plays both ways.

I would guess the plan is to play the best players (as it was with the OL last year and why Bolton was shifted from RG to RT and have the best 5 OL on the field). I think that is what will happen here, Molohan, Marudas, King, and Lowe are the best four by a good margin. Doesn't matter if there is a heavier player available for the middle. On the goal line, they can always go 4-4-3 and drop a safety if need be. or even 5-2-4, moving the two outside linebackers up on the line and using the Safeties as LBs.

What is the lowest total number of points given up during a season of league play in the Big Sky??

What is the highest output of points during a season of league play in the Big Sky??

Can this years team eclipse both of those marks this season?
