The coaches already have 4 new transfers coming in this year:

Chris Kolone, DL 6-4 280 Fr San Diego, CA , Transfer from Arizona
Jason Macciola, DL 6-3 240 Jr Fremont, CA , Transfer from De Anza JC
David Siataga, DL 5-11 290 Jr Sacramento, CA, Transfer from Valley Sacramento City College
Joe Rothenberger. 6-4, 270-lb tackle, Transfer from Chaffey College in California

Transfer from OL to DL - Sweet Lou Saucedo - 6-5 317

Incoming Freshman - Brandon Hoffenbacker, DL 6-3 275

That's six DL that were not there last year as DL.

How many more do you need?

Plus with it sounding like Matakis due back for the first conference games, we should be pretty well off now I think (assuming he comes back). He will be a HUGE plus to have this year if he can work hard and make it back. I wouldn't mind seeing one more 285 guy show up though either. Can never have too many. Especially with all the injuries to our line players this spring.

So it's - new:

Chris Kolone
Jason Macciola
David Siataga
Joe Rothenberger

Existing (Per the current roster):
Andy Matakis
Daryl Rogers
Sky Johnson
Dylan Kinkelaar
Clive Lowe (OLB now though I believe, but could be moved back to DE if we revert to a 4-3)
Sean Neill
Brandon Hoffenbacker
Lou Saucedo
Aaron Papich

Looks like plenty of quality depth to me. Hopefully with this group we can restore that dominant D-Line that we've had since around 2001.

Great time to be a BOBCAT!

Regarding Lou Saucedo: Is D-Line new to him and if so can he be efeective at that position? Someone posted after one of the Spring scrimmages that he was very ineffective at NT.

Last year he started the year on the DL side (red-shirt scout team), then was moved to OL (Guard) half way through and stayed there until after the end of the year. Then he was moved back to DL just prior to start of Spring. I think they decided they needed more DL help than OL help. (I believe he play DL in HS (TE on the Offense)).

He is Huge and long arms. Was not as fast as I expected. from what I see (why he wasn't a tackle on the OL I guess).

As to not looking great in the spring, 3-4 is new to him/team, and you have to think the OL he was facing is REALLY good, possibly the best he will face (only exception might be OSU's). If anything, the OL was faster/quicker than he was (why he got hurt). Also, NT will be a tough position for anyone. So jury is still out on if he can dominate on the DL (as much as you would expect with his size). He will be a good player

I noticed they have Clive Lowe as a Sr. on the roster? Is that right? I thought he was going to be a Junior this year? Maybe I'm mistaken?

Last year he was listed as a Soph* (Red Shirt used).
So I would guess it's a mistake and he's a Junior this year.

Does not make sense, he was in the 2002 recuiting class (per the Chornical archive) with Lulay and Bolton
Both Bolton and Lulay are Seniors and both have not used their red-shirt.
Chive is a Junior, only way to still be a junior is to have used the red-shirt.
(or he is a senior and still has the red-shirt).

Going back to last year's game info, I still think he is a Junior this year and has used the Red Shirt.

I'm pretty sure that the Chronicle is wrong, and that Lowe was a true freshman in 2003. I'm positive that he never used a redshirt year...he played as a true freshman.

25 players sign with MSU football
By PETE FAGGEN Chronicle Sports Editor

(Some of the extracts from that artical)

"Defensively, the Bobcats bolstered their defensive line, signing five linemen, headlined by Eric Laumatia of Rancho Verde, Calif., and Clive Lowe, of Coral Springs, Fla. Transfer tackle Jason Nicastro (Cal State Northridge) should vie for time immediately while Washington State transfer Ryan Calhoun may be switched to OL."

Clive Lowe, DL (6-3/210/Coral Springs, FL -- Douglas)
Heralded as one of the most talented athletes ever to join the Bobcat football program... registered 17 sacks, 28 tackles for a loss, and 75 tackles from his defensive end slot... played in both the Broward North-South All-Star Game and the Broward-Dade All-Star Game... outstanding rebounder on Douglas' state-ranked hoops team... has run a 4.60 40-yard dash. MSU Coach Mike Kramer: ``Clive, potentially, has few limits. He is tall, long-armed, rangy, fast, strong, and plays with great determination."

Jeff Bolton, OL (6-4/270/Hailey, ID--Wood River)
Played for former Bobcat offensive lineman John Blackman... was dominant during last summer's Bobcat summer camp on the MSU campus ... was second team all-state and first team all-conference on both sides of the ball, earning team MVP honors... averages 20 points and nine boards in basketball. MSU Coach Mike Kramer: ``Jeff showed extremely well during our camp this summer. He plays with emotion and confidence. He was able to turn a tough season around after several of his teammates were dismissed from the team for violation of rules by moving to running back late in the season.''

Joe Hirst, OL (6-7/225/Spokane, WA--East Valley)
A talented two-way starter in the Greater Spokane League who earned all-league honors as a defensive end and offensive tackle... named team's most valuable lineman... plays center in basketball, and has thrown the discus 140-0. MSU Coach Mike Kramer: ``Joe is a tall, long-armed, athletic player with good balance. He is a classic left tackle with good speed, but has a long ways to go in terms of physical maturity."

Travis Lulay, QB (6-0/187/Aumsville, OR--Regis)
An accomplished and poised quarterback with above average athleticism and vision... played in an up-tempo offense and has demonstrated the ability to make every type of throw. MSU Coach Mike Kramer: ``Travis is athletic, fast, and strong-armed. He has made the throws, a trait which Coach Bailey covets. With his capabilities we are in great shape for the future. Having operated from the shotgun he knows defenses, reads coverages, and makes correct throws.

Wow, I could've sworn he started here in 2003. Either way, he did play and start as a true freshman...I definitely remember that because it was sort of a big deal for someone that young to be starting on such a good defense.

Probably did start in 2003 as a freshman, but as a Red Shirt Freshman. Still difficult to do on such a good D that year.

An Oct 3rd, 2003 article says "Freshman defensive end Clive Lowe had four tackles, including a sack, against Northern Colorado. His 2 1/2 sacks are tied for the team lead."

Clive will be a RS-Jr. this fall, and WILL be a dominating LB. If the D moved back to a 4-3, Clive will stay at LB, he can be 1st team all conference good. It is his natural position and he played it in HS. The coaches tried to get him to put on weight and be a Neil Smith type player. Clive couldnt put on the weight needed for a DE, and is a natural fit at OLB. Remember he had 2 picks as DE his frosh year.

Sweet Lou as NT... well, he was going up against the best OL in the conference, and is currently still a RS. I'd cut him some slack, he will be good in time, and will see the field often this year. I expect growing pains, but it will be well worth it by the time he learns the position.

Think of this. Our DL has a soph (Pappich 6-3, 265) and 3 frosh (Kolone 6-4, 288) (Sweet Lou 6-5, 315) (Hoffenbacker 6-4, 285). As Cory Hart sang, "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades" 8)

OK, well then I'm just completely wrong then. I stand corrected. He should be a junior this year then, right?

Wait a minute...if he came in with Lulay and didn't redshirt...he should be a senior...unless he got a medical redshirt...

Another concern I have about our D-line is speed. Have we completely left the "smaller quick" defensive line philosophy and gone big...and probably slower? Is this the reason for going to the 3-4?

CatPride seems to agree with me that he is a RS-Junior. That means he has used his red-shirt year. He is NOT a true Junior, or senior as Lulay and Bolton are. We have two years left of Clive (which is great).

We have tons of speed at LB (King and Clive are burners). With the 3-4, you need a little more bulk to tie up OL. If you notice, the OL is getting bigger and bigger at all the schools. Look at ours. Only Fig and Brent are smurfs (and they are heavy smurfs). The others are BIG (tall, strong and atheltic like Bolton, Jensen, and Hirst).
