free Viagra for sex offender's

Post by briannell » Thu Jun 30, 2005 2:39 pm

SAN FRANCISCO - California taxpayers helped pay for Viagra and other impotence drugs for at least 137 registered sex offenders in the past year, the state Attorney General's office said.

An audit found that Medi-Cal — the state Medicaid agency that funds some health services programs for California's poor — spent $2.6 million to provide 5,855 men with Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs, including 137 men who were registered sex offenders, Nathan Barankin, spokesman for Attorney General Bill Lockyer, said Wednesday.

Lockyer's office received a list of Medi-Cal-funded Viagra recipients from the Department of Health Services and ran that list against the men whose whereabouts are registered with local law enforcement, Barankin said.

Last month, under federal pressure to prevent sex offenders from obtaining taxpayer-funded Viagra, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger directed state agencies to stop providing such ex-convicts with erectile dysfunction drugs.

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services even warned it might cut federal funding for states that do not make serious efforts to cut convicted sex offenders off from these drugs.

State authorities across the country have been searching their databases after a New York state audit showed that 198 sex offenders there received government-reimbursed Viagra between January 2000 and March 2005.

Yeah, I'm not really sure why California's medical program is paying for Viagra for anybody, quite honestly. I'm not sure how that system works, but I'd much prefer that only drugs that are absolutely necessary for survival be covered by state-funded programs.

Maybe the tie-in with the sex offenders in the article will turn enough heads that the Republicans in the CA legislature will be able to make some changes to the program as a whole.

Rebecca: I edited your post a bit to delete some of the clutter from around the article (ads, etc.). Once you have everything pasted in, you can delete what isn't necessary by highlighting the unwanted text and hitting "delete."

brad - thanks for the help with the edit. yeah, I don't get why it's covered but I'm sure most men would agree that SEX is required for a long happy life. Also sex releases stress, so helps with long life. as a side note, if the females in their lives aren't getting sex, and a good amount of it, they'll kill the men. So, viagra keeps them living longer, but I don't think the state should pay for it.

wont even comment on sex offender's. i think by now you know how I feel about them. off with their heads.

meat - Dozer is a full grown male old english mastiff. yes, when he stands up he's over our 6 ft. fence and currently 197 pounds, but will get to 210.

better than any man alive, and no fights :D

if Brian goes, i'll just keep my mastiff, but for now Brian wont let him climb into bed, he's too big.

-rebecca

ps all my furniture is log, so it would go well if the price is right.

FDA links drugs to blindness, does CA now pay for disability due to Viagra?
