With respect to "vision." Insurgents can only be fought through infiltration and intelligence. I agree that the Pentagon got caught with their pants down after "mission accomplished." They admitted that. That's the first step toward recovery, right?

They're testing this really cool device that looks like the orb that Ben Kenobi used to test Luke Skywalker's force in the first Star Wars. The real orb hovers ahead of the special forces in an urban setting and the controller can make it peak in windows and around corners, giving the group real time intelligence.

The other cool thing they're testing is a tank sentry, which can also be programmed to kill other vehicles. It's basically a little all-terrain robot equipped with a single TOW. It runs on a "forever" battery, and sleeps until the motion sensor says, "wake." It can also be programmed to guard a predetermined path, and sleep in between "walks."

BBG - That's fascinating (I'm not laughing) and I'll take your word for it, until I see/hear otherwise. Whoever invented this stuff or whoever knows how to use it properly will be the Patton of our time.

Chesty was over-rated?!?!?! Now that's funny! The entire USMC is laughing at that one.

Check it out - Forbes isn't where I read it initially, it might have been Popular Science or something like that - my father-in-law has a "passion" for this stuff, so he always has me look at what's in the pipeline.

Interesting and just in the nick of time considering the Army can't get anyone to join. (Tee-hee) I can just see one of these things incognito sitting at a cafe in Baghdad and speaking fluent Iraqi, Iraqese, Iraqian or whatever.

Indeed...The funny part is, some of these robots will be designed to do exactly that. Through visual, olfactory and audio, they will attempt to trick the enemy into doing certain things...battlefield shaping.

Go to that site for some great Chesty quotes. Ooo-Rah!
Sorry for being late to the response on this, but nevertheless can't let it go without comment.

Puller was definitely one of the more colorful personalities during the 50s, and I would be interested to see his response to the significant doctrinal difference between our military then and now. (He'd probably still complain about the Air Force, though... )
