Sportsmans Warehouse-Billings Closing

Post by Billings_Griz » Wed Feb 17, 2010 3:44 pm

Sportsman’s Warehouse at 3676 Pierce Parkway in West Billings is closing tomorrow.

The store by Pierce RV off the Zoo Drive exit, which opened August 2008, lost its lease.

“We have been engaged in an ongoing discussion with the building’s owners but have been unable to either extend the current lease or negotiate a new lease agreement,” said Chief Executive John Schaefer.

The landlord was not named. Sportsman’s Warehouse has to vacate the building by March 1.

The company will continue to do in Billings as an e-commerce site, Schaefer said.

Last year, the chain based in Midvale, Utah, liquidated 23 stores and sold off another 15, including stores in Bozeman, Helena and Missoula. Then Sportsman’s Warehouse filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware.

Company officials blamed their cash flow problems on poor sales and the global economic slowdown. There are no details yet on why the Billings store is closing.

Our Sportsman's in Helena was one that was bought out by the Canadian firm, Wholesale Sports. Other than the sign above the door, you would never know a change had been made. Same store layout, same merchandise (in fact, there is even still products in the store labeled "Sportsmans Warehouse"), same everything. Not a bad store, but I would prefer to shop at Bob Wards or Capital Sports.

That's too bad, but with the new Cabelas store opening, I'll bet it took a big bite out of their market share in Billings. Here in Helena the Sportsmans Warehouse was sold to someone else and it is essentially the same store. I do most of my outdoor shopping at Bob Wards or Scheels in Great Falls.

Since the landlord is the one cutting off the lease, they must have another store ready to jump into that spot. I wonder who it could be.

That would be one big ass 7-11

However, it will be interesting to see what goes in down there. Lots of building going on. The new Honda store (Underriners) is supposed to be ready March 1st.

That's a laugher - lost their lease? Nice cover story. I know for a fact that they closed due to too much competition and a bad location. I work with a guy who's wife manages at Cabela's and he told us 2 weeks ago to watch for them to close. The higher ups at SW saw the writing on the wall and pulled the plug. I just heard an ad on the radio a couple hours ago about them having and end of season closeout sale.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.
