Favorite Covers?

Post by CelticCat » Tue Jun 01, 2010 5:32 pm

What are your favorite cover versions of a popular song?

Probably my favorite all time is Reel Big Fish's version of "Take on Me". I do not like the original version at all, but the cover changes it quite a bit.

Skindred covering "Elective Avenue" isn't too bad either.

Roger Waters does an incredible cover of "knockin' on heavens door".

Being a gigantic Pearl Jam fan and also a big fan of The Who, Love Reign O'er Me covered by Pearl Jam is one of my favorite covers. It does a lot of justice to the original. They also covered The Real Me by The Who which is the second song of this video. Also a good one!

Helps my dad (gigantic Who fan) and I were at this concert. :D

Also always loved The Lemonheads and their cover of Mrs. Robinson:

Worst cover ever: Madonna American Pie

This one makes me want to kick a puppy.

For changing a song, The Sex Pistols (w/o Rotten) redefined My Way

I think The Pogues completely gave Ewen MacColl's Dirty Old Town what it had been missing in countless covers.

Any cover that wins a lawsuit against Disney is alright in my book. Plus Tom Wait's version of Heigh Ho! unearths some brutal realness that is there in the song that gets overlooked with the whistling.

But my favorite is Johnny Cash's version of Rusty Cage by Soundgarden. Just a masterpiece.

Sportin' good picks. Always loved Rusty Cage cover by Johnny Cash. This might be his best cover though (IMO):

Hurt, originally by Nine Inch Nails.

Coach, it would be worthwhile to have a thread just on favorite Johnny Cash covers. My second favorite is Johnny and Joe Strummer dueting Redemption Song:

Deadsy's cover of Rush's Tom Sawyer - heavy on the crunch guitar.

Machine Head's cover of The Police's Message in a Bottle.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

If you like punk at all, you can't have a cover thread without mentioned Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Pure cover band, with members from NOFX, Swingin' Utters, Foo Fightesr, & Lagwagon. They do anything from country, pop hits from the 50s to R&B, to Broadway:

how about cake's cover of "war pigs" OR cream's "crossroads". the KING of covers has to be the gourds version of "gin and juice"
