X Box Kinect?
Does anyone have one? Thoughts? Superior to the Wii? Worth the investment?

Re: X Box Kinect?
I have both an Xbox and a Wii. I won't be getting a kinect any time soon or ever. It seems kinda like a gimmick at the moment and the games I want to play for the Xbox wouldn't be able to play. I would definitely wait a while to get the kinect. As for the Wii, I like it. It has the all the old games I played as a kid.ChiOCat wrote:Does anyone have one? Thoughts? Superior to the Wii? I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

Re: X Box Kinect?
How is it a gimmick? That would make the Wii motion stuff a gimmick. It's the same technology. And you can still play the same games on the 360 if you have Kinect. It doesn't render them unplayable all of a sudden. The Wii is only good for those old games. You might as well just use a Super Nintendo or a GameCube. Same graphics pretty much.ImagineSanta wrote:I have both an Xbox and a Wii. I won't be getting a kinect any time soon or ever. Every time I've used the Wii for a game like Mario Kart, for example, I have had to use the regular controller plugged in. The motion controller and the wheel were just too "sensitive" to make it feel like it was reacting right when racing. I'll stick with the 360. I won't be buying any of the motion sensor things for any console, for the record.

We have a PS3 but trying to keep little boys that love video games active...the PS3 doesn't really do that. Trying to kill 2 birds with one stone.ilovethecats wrote:+1AlphaGriz1 wrote:PS3

ps3 has the "move" that i heard is pretty cool. my guess is it's very similar to the kinect but i have never played one. maybe check out any reviews comparing the "move" to the "kinect" and see what you come up with.ChiOCat wrote:We have a PS3 but trying to keep little boys that love video games active...the PS3 doesn't really do that. Oh, and we do have DirecTV too, but I don't know that I credit either of you with that.ilovethecats wrote:ps3 has the "move" that i heard is pretty cool. my guess is it's very similar to the kinect but i have never played one. maybe check out any reviews comparing the "move" to the "kinect" and see what you come up with.ChiOCat wrote:We have a PS3 but trying to keep little boys that love video games active...the PS3 doesn't really do that. The Kinect and whatever the thing is for the PS3 are about the same and both awesome. I really enjoy my Wii for the games that it has, but the graphics are pretty basic and you cant do a lot of fast movements with it. The Kinect reads your entire body rather than just the controller. I would definitely recommend it if you are considering it, for any age

Re: X Box Kinect?
video games are what is wrong with the youth of america. why not pick up a basketball, football, baseball, instead of video games. i use to play them a ton when i was younger and now i realize what a waste of time and money video games are.
have a roommate that is twenty four and he plays hallo religiously it's kind of sickening and depressing. got to grow up sometime don't you?

actually, what is wrong with america is people blaming everyone and everything besides themselves for problems in this country. i can think of a million things that can be very bad if you're stupid enough to let them be. thankfully i had great parents and doing nothing but play video games all day was never an option. video games aren't what's wrong with america....poor parenting is what's wrong with america.
i've just never understood that. ya, idiots like your roommate who do nothing else are just that...idiots. but many of us are very capable of enjoying some time playing madden or tiger and still get out of the house...

Re: X Box Kinect?
very true, but i think the idea of playing video games has taking over a lot of the youth, who for the most part would rather do that than something outside. i don't think that idea can even be debated.

well, it most certainly can be debated until i see hard evidence and facts that say otherwise. i don't know all of the kids so it would be silly for me to comment who is doing what. i'll concede that it certainly appears that video games are more popular with kids now than even when i was a kid 15 years ago. but even if that is true without a shadow of a doubt...all it does is prove my point. video games can only be as bad for a kid and as consuming for a kid as his or her parents let them be.Hi-Line Bobcat wrote:very true, but i think the idea of playing video games has taking over a lot of the youth, who for the most part would rather do that than something outside. i don't think that idea can even be debated.
we blame food for making our kids fat, we blame video games for our kids being dumb and lazy, we blame drugs and alcohol for kids becoming addicted, we blame guns for kids being violent, we blame tv, movies, and music for kids doing almost anything wrong....yet no one stops and looks at the parents.
this thread is a perfect example. Chi came looking for advice on a game system and her main concern was her kids not sitting on their butts all day. seems to me she is figuring out a way for her kids to enjoy games without becoming addicted fat, lazy slobs. i bet she's not alone. blaming anything for poor parenting is getting old imo...

Re: X Box Kinect?
I hate video games. Honestly. I've never been a big fan and I spend much of my time now arguing about them. We have rules, no video games on school nights and we try to limit it to 1 hr a day. But little boys love them and realistically I know it's going to be a part of their time. So if they're going to play I'd like some of it to be something more active.ilovethecats wrote:well, it most certainly can be debated until i see hard evidence and facts that say otherwise. i don't know all of the kids so it would be silly for me to comment who is doing what. i'll concede that it certainly appears that video games are more popular with kids now than even when i was a kid 15 years ago. but even if that is true without a shadow of a doubt...all it does is prove my point. video games can only be as bad for a kid and as consuming for a kid as his or her parents let them be.Hi-Line Bobcat wrote:very true, but i think the idea of playing video games has taking over a lot of the youth, who for the most part would rather do that than something outside. i don't think that idea can even be debated.

When my kids go sledding I make them walk the whole way to the hill! During the summer we walk the whole way to the lake from our camper (I think we're one of the only people at the campground without a golf cart) They do sports and plenty outdoor time. I teach group fitness so I'm pretty sure I have a good handle on their activity level. But they would always rather play video games than anything else. So as with everything else in life I'm trying to teach them all things in moderation.
- Adding after re-reading your post: When we lived in Grand Forks we had a wonderful family next door, both kids babysat for us a few times. The boy was in high school and had decided on his own to give up video games because he was addicted and spending all his money on games. I thought that was very cool for a teenage boy to decide.

I played a shi* ton of video games when I was a kid. I still play some. But I also played a lot of sports. I was outside a lot. And there have been studies showing that kids who play video games make better surgeons. Better hand-eye coordination.

Re: X Box Kinect?
I played a ton of video games when I was a kid, and yes I do play a decent amount now and then still.
I also played basketball, soccers, and football when I was a kid too. I also played guns.
I don't know why people are always so quick to blame video games. Video games, just like any other entertainment medium, can be overindulged. I would argue that playing video games for 4 hours is more productive to a young kid than watching TV for 4 hours. It is documented that video games develop hand-eye coordination, and at least use brain power. And then with the Wii, Kinect and the Move, now you can be physically active as well as mentally active at the same time.
But to answer the original question of this thread, I don't know.
I think motion gaming is a gimmick and have only played a bit of Wii at friend's houses.
