Two Questions

Post by spider » Sat Aug 21, 2004 8:05 pm

Does anyone know where Mike Williams is? I haven't seen him at practice. Hopefully he hasn't left the team. When is the transfer corner from syracuse supposed to be here?

Some practice notes for you guys.

Ricky Gatewood is looking pretty good in practice. He caught a couple long balls and took them in for the score. Justin Domineck is a stout looking guy. Hopefully he has moves to go along with his power, unlike another Big Sky running back (won't say a name). You know who I'm talking about. They think he is better than Roger Robinson. On a side note I think Roger Robinson is by far the best RB in the league.

Today in practice Matakis was going up against Beniger and just did a straight bull-rush and pushed Beniger all the way into a dummy, that was simulating the quarterback, and then threw him on the ground. He looks very strong. I like the intensity in practice, although there seems to be a lot of fighting. For those of you who have missed practice the last few days, I think there is going to be something on CSTV in the coming weeks. Today I noticed a CSTV cameraman at practice.

Heard Mike had some eligibility issues - but he should be at practice tuesday.

I talked to my Dad, who is a huge MW fan ever since meeting him at the Lobster Cook a few years ago, and he said he specifically asked Coach K about him. Apparently Krames was exited about Mike getting his grades in line and thought that he was ready for a breakout year.

I've always rooted for MW... Hopefully he and Jimmy B can become big-time contributors, as they have always been two of my favorites.

According to the Trib, Mike Williams and Travis Nellermoe have left the team because they are academically ineligible.

Going to trave to Bozeman today (kids need to do some school shopping). While they're doing that, I'm headed to practice. I'll report when I get the chance - not that it will be worth anything.

I doubt that I am the only one in here who has some big-time concerns about all the kids that are leaving. Does anyone have any kind of insight into why? I can't remember a camp with this many kids going since Kramer's first year. I am concerned not only for selfish reasons, but I am also concerned that these young men are not receiving a college education. I remember Kramer being super-high on Nellermoe and Ophus, they were big signings when he got them. I sure hope Ophus comes back, whatever his reasons for leaving are. This sort of thing just never has a good impact on chemistry...

Maybe mr. clean graduated from the Potera-Haskins school of coaching.

I was going to do this anyway in response to all the press Jason Goodman got when he left. This looks like as good a time as any. In addition to the guys who left most recently, here is a list of players listed on the preseason roster in the Press Guide last year not listed this year who still had eligibility left. This is an FYI only. I'm sure the reasons are varied. Some you already know about.

DeAngelo Wall, CB, Montclair, CA
Robert Maddox, CB, Coconut Creek, CA
Travis Motley, DB, Bellevue, WA
Brent Owens, QB, Vienna, GA
Jesse Wegner, WR, Billings
Demontae Fitzgerald, DB, Walnut Creek, CA
Dan McInemy, RB, Billings
David Mayfield, RB, LaHabra, CA
Chase Isle, RB, Wolf Point
Jeff Galloway, WR, Spokane, WA
Jonathan Edwards, LB, Pompano Beach, FL
Doc Fraley, LB, Stevensville
Shane Schantz, WR, Miles City
Ross Judisch, LB, Conrad
Mike Weiss, DE, Baxter, MN
Chris Young, LB, Windemere, FL
Sean Kelly, DL, Great Falls
Geoff Scott, OT, Dayton, WY
Ernest King, DL, Corona, CA
Torin Roschinger, WR, Dillon
Jason Goodman, TE, Great Falls
Cody Samuelson, TE, Volborg
Mike Feist, DL, Downey, CA
Sean McDonough, TE, LaHabra, CA
Nick Barbero, TE/DL, San Ramon, CA

academics

Post by Cat13 » Sun Aug 22, 2004 4:13 pm

Brief and simple....This is regards to many of the ineligible players recently. There is one man to put all the pressure on, not only offensively but as the academic advisor. You all know who it is. It is the responsibility of the coach not only to coach the student athlete on the field, but also help lead that student to academic success, i.e keep him eligible by using all resources available. Frankly, he has not used these resources from a great academic school such as ours. I am very disappointed in seeing all these good athletes leave

Nobody on the outside has any idea what's actually going on, so it's pointless to speculate. Kramer is very serious about the players getting an education. Sure, all coaches say that but Kramer is genuine. No doubt in my mind. From "The Line" (If anyone hasn't seen this yet, you really need to.) to the Meetings I've been to, Kramer is always hammering the education piece home. All teams have several dropoffs, every year.

Forgot one point. The coaches can only do so much in the way of support resources, etc. Ultimately it's the student player's responsibility to get things done in the classroom.

I saw MW practice Friday and he looked good. Can someone tell me how they become academically ineligible one week into fall practice? I would think they would know about that by the end of spring semester.

Also if there is anyone who quits after one week of ball, they must not have their heart in Football. Any freshman who quits because of playing time is fooling himself. I can't imagine any players having a problem with the coaching staff at this early juncture...Friday it looked to me like the coaches were teaching their brains out with a minimum of yelling and cursing at any of them. Sometimes kids have a predetermined idea of what college ball is like and because they were HS stars...they feel they should dominate until the first time someone knocks them on their backside... then the doubts set in. One thing this coaching staff doesn't do is baby the ones who show any propensity for self pity or doubt. They can be pretty blunt with those players. I can't see any other reason for a new guy to quit before full contact other than he just doesn't really want to play football.

Other than the fact that the "quitters" seem to be O-linemen and receivers "the need for beef and speed" it's too bad they aren't safetys, LB's and RB's because kids like Ross Judisch and Dan McInerny would probably jump at the chance to take their scholarships.

I don't think Mike Williams has been at practice at all. Maybe you saw Mike Brown (83) a freshman receiver. If he was there I missed it.

I couldn've sworn that I saw Williams there on tuesday's practice....unless it was a different #29 that was a receiver

Ok maybe that's what happened...I assumed when the coach called him Mike it was Williams and had changed his number. Brown looks about the same size and quickness as Williams and I was a distance away.

I can see how you got that one mixed up Helcat, especially with the similarities on speed and size.

How did that Mike Brown look? He sounds like he could be challenging guys like Roosevelt and Sullivan for PT.

He looked muscled like a sprinter and really quick to me...that's why I figured it was Williams wearing a new number. He didn't stick out as far as catching the ball though...but no one did except Gatewwod.

That's not a good thing if you ask me.

Yards after catch dont mean a thing if the receiver doesnt catch the ball.

What about Chaz Guinn? He was supposed to be "the guy" for the revamped receivers corp.

I watched Guinn at practice on Sunday, and I thought he did well. He has good hands, speed and size. Work on timing a little bit, and he and Lulay will have a good season.

Of course, I've seen one whole practice, and for about 10 minutes I watched the receivers. This qualifies me as a certified talent evaluator. 8)

A friend just told me he was there, he is there, and he'll be there. The Trib. must have gotten some mis-information, Appears they're just waiting on some paperwork... Great news! 8)
