I would be curious to see a study that broke out the number of injuries versus I-AA teams and I-A teams. I have a feeling that the "body bag" thing is more of a football urban legend than anything. We don't seem to get people hurt any more often against the I-A teams than we do in any other game. It's not like we are a junior high team playing against a team of professional wrestlers -- they match up pretty well on size and strength, for the most part.

I assume playing CSU is no more risky than playing a tough I-AA school in terms of the potential for injury. The big downside of playing up is the relative certainty of a loss, which could hurt teams at playoff time. Even worse would be the potential for getting blown out, which could hurt the psyche of the team (like MSU vs. Florida).

That being said, MSU should just go ahead and beat CSU this season, OSU next season, take the money on the way out of town and graciously thank both schools for the opportunity they gave us.

One easy thing to look at how did the cats do after Wyoming, and WSU that last couple of years?

How did the Cats do after they played Cal Poly or any other nonconference game each year? Poorly, probably. I don't think that sample size is going to give us much of a trend. The Cats have managed to play poorly early in the season for years now regardless of what game preceded it.

We opened in Florida in '88 and were coming off a 1-10 season. It was Earle's second year. Surprisingly the score was "only" 19-0 at halftime, but we were blown out in the second half. Interestingly, if you talk to most guys who played in that game they will tell you it was the highlight of their career. We came home and got killed by NAIA Messa State. That was about as low as I can remember things ever getting (until 2000). Then somehow that season things got turned around and we went on to beat Boise State and Nevada back to back and ended 4-7. Don't recall any abnormal injuries coming out of Gainsville other than heat exhaustion.
Overall, we've played Colorado State a couple of times, ditto Wyoming, Kansas, the Cougars 4-5 times since the early 80's and seemed to have survived. I know the 1A fans hate to play 1AA's and have their guys get beat up, i.e. WSU qb Jason Gesser having his sterum separated by Adam Cordario.

I just want to thank the cats and the Great Falls Trib for this information today. It has given us something to talk about other than the pending holy union of BAC and BearBAC.

2: Yes, the Griz can skip the 1-A trip becouse Wash -Griz generates money. Money you only wish the cats could generate, I think you know the term used when cats complain about all the money the Griz get playing at home.
Yes, I wish we had that million dollar deficit! Oh boy, that's where its at!

One year deficit. Cats have run a deficit since forever.....

Wanna, bet we get in the black before the cats.

Also, cat sports gets money from general University money.. Griz sports pays money into the University fund...a lot of the revenue from games goes into the general fund.

There is certainly no denying the fact that the Griz make a lot more money than we do. Grizzlies are definately the cream of the crop when it comes to fan attendence, nice facilities, etc. Hell, I was raised as a huge Griz fan, I went to many games as a kid, including almost every game the year the Griz won it in ... 95 was it? Sorry my memory is a little iffy. I remember going to the semi-final game against Stephen F Austin and just hammering them, like 70-21 or something.

But times have changed, I've grown up, and now I know what a fool I was. I mean, I used to be a Cowboy fan when I was little! Awful.

Back to the point, I think MSU's numbers for attendence will be a lot higher this year. People are actually starting to get excited about Bobcat football again. I know I will be there every weekend tailgating with my fraternity brothers. ;)

A true Griz fan would have known that the score was 70-14.

It would be a severe mistake to believe anything jagur1 says regarding UM's budget deficit as he obviously is speaking about something he knows nothing about!

Do I have to post every newspaper article?

Cats problem is on going. State plans to support sports for sometime.

Griz problem was a case of overspending, and a one time accounting mistake. Plans have been put in place to pay off the debt.

To make it simple as I understand it. The Griz sports Cash flows and Cat sports do not cash flow. Hence the need to inject the program with a money game. (body bag game.

If thats the reason to get a big time 1-A game, I'm all for it. Its exciting. Lets see, WSU twice/CSU/WYOMING in last few years, I don't seem to remember any bodybags except in the WSU game when they were carting Cougars off the field. But you are right, our defense does hit teams in the mouth thats for sure. CSU might need some body bags this year.

jag - if I were you, I'd keep opinions to yourself on this deficit issue. I seriously doubt you know any more than other schmucks who read the papers, and the papers are definitely NOT telling the whole story. You trying to say UM is hanlding their situation any better than MSU is rediculous. Makes you sound foolish.

Both schools have budget problems. Rest assured both schools are also dealing with things as best they are equiped to.

By the way, I think playing division I schools is a good thing for us. Yes, the most obvious part is the money, and we do need it. But it also gives us some publicity and gives me a chance to road trip to Oklahoma. :D It will be a good challenge for the team, a hopeless one perhaps, but one I think will benefit the team.
