No one arguing there is some financial gain but this is about positioning (MSU) for the playoffs.Siouxfan wrote:Look at the economics of this decision and see how it was an no-brainer:
For MSU to go to Fargo on charter (bus not feasible due to distance):
loss of $85,000 (just chartering and the wait time are the largest expense)
vs.
paying $100,000 for buyout
A loss of $15,000 for doing the buyout with NDSU
For MSU to go to Dallas
-$100,000 for charter and hotels
but receive
+$350,000 for guarantee (+/-) $50,000
A gain of $250,000 to go to SMU
Net gain: $235,000 (+/-) $50,000
Should Fields have gone to Fargo and paid out $85,000 for travel, or should he have not chose SMU, whereby he forfeits a likely $235,000 gain?

Re: MSU vs NDSU 2013 rematch
the issue isn't that we traded ndsu for an fbs team. it's how we did it. this game wasn't even officially confirmed until a couple months ago. it's not like it's brand new information that playing an fbs team makes more money. why make this game official only to buy it out a month later. and what is the point of a "home and home" if once the other team plays in bozeman we just buy out the rematch. it's weak.
and what about the fact that we could have played a team that we could potentially see in the playoffs. seems like that might be valuable. but now we'll finish the regular season, have a good record, be a top team in the country, probably win a playoff game, and then get bounced by several td's again.
i hate everything about this. just stop scheduling fcs non-conference games then. make money, pad the resume, and call it like it is...

I appreciate your perspective, but it misses one detail; the players. Credit where it's due McGhee and company had to be eyeing this game as an opportunity. Go to Fargo and set a nice tone for 2013. I am sure he and the rest will take great solace in the financial gains. This cheats your players of an awesome experience and opportunity. That said, McGhee's a good soldier and will fall in.ilovethecats wrote:the issue isn't that we traded ndsu for an fbs team. it's how we did it. this game wasn't even officially confirmed until a couple months ago. it's not like it's brand new information that playing an fbs team makes more money. why make this game official only to buy it out a month later. and what is the point of a "home and home" if once the other team plays in bozeman we just buy out the rematch. it's weak.

I know the Griz have had their share of buyouts in the past, but no way in hell do we pass up the opportunity to knock off the defending champs in their house. Can't put a price on that. You pussies have every right to be pissed.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

If NDSU wasn't the defending NC this probably wouldn't look as bad. That part really sucks.

Some NDSU fans are stating that UND put MSU up to this, as if MSU is a lapdog to UND.

The NDSU beatwriter is claiming that MSU President Waded Cruzado is the one that forced through this change.

I guess when you have a ****** team like UND, you find your entertainment trying to jump in on this discussion that doesn't even involve Muss and his losing team.Siouxfan wrote:Imagine having to deal with this kind of moronic postings 365 days a year on this board!NewEra wrote:Alot of classy posts on here from alot of bison homers..Get over it! acting like to state of montana filled Field's inbox with messages saying that we are to scared to play the all mighty bison..this forum is almost as annoying as egriz rite now because of you morons.

NDSU's AD called out the entire Big Sky conference for their "douchebaggery", as if Commissioner Fullerton will interfere in MSU's non-conference scheduling. I'm sure other Big Sky AD's will take note of those moronic comments.

I understand why NDSU fans are pissed but this is a fan board and I would guess that 98% of Bobcat fans hate this move. Look at the response on here when it was first announced that we were playing in Fargo. Your preaching to the choir. If you want to vent email fields, the chronicle, etc. The Bison fans are trying to take it out on the people that support their cause!

What is entertaining is how mass paranoia always strikes the Bison fan base about UND masterminding any perceived slight against NDSU, as well as NDSU's AD perfecting his manner of antagonizing everybody but the Bison fan base. He's about as bad at PR at NDSU's President Bresciani. The whole thing is just a hilarious spectacle. Thanks to your AD and your fan base for providing some laughs.WYOBISONMAN wrote: I guess when you have a ****** team like UND, you find your entertainment trying to jump in on this discussion that doesn't even involve Muss and his losing team.

Re: MSU vs NDSU 2013 rematch
Like everyone I'm disappointed, but Buy-Out clauses exist for a reason. One reason is to ensure that one game doesn't make it impossible to put together a complete schedule. Another is to allow you to accept a better offer. I believe the terms of the buy out are mutually agreed upon by both parties. If so, then the amount stipulated should be raised or the buy out clause eliminated if $100,000 isnt enough. It seems the home team is always at a higher risk of being bought out.
The people that make decisions like this are doing so as stewards of their athletic departments. In MSU's case someone needed to decide if the benefit of buying out outweighs the cost both in terms of the immediate expense (fan backlash and $100,000) and future costs (inability to schedule other teams and motivational).

I agree. You wanna be the best....play the best.....beat the best. The money breakdown makes perfect sense to me, but this is football! The greatest thing about this sport is that you look your opponent in the eye and dare him to try to beat you. You don't play politics for financial gain with him. At some point it just has to be about the game. I'm happy that the athletic department will make some cash...but man....there is more to life.Topher wrote:I appreciate your perspective, but it misses one detail; the players. Re: MSU vs NDSU 2013 rematch
IMO I think this is a pure dodge with the available excuse of money. What would set the tone for the season better, beating the defending champions who return 20 starters or getting a payday with an off chance of also getting a win? Beating a team that will be in the top 3 IMO, would set the stage for a good season. Georgia Southern lost by 3 last year, makes you wonder what they would have done had they not bought out earlier and that team was able to play in the atmosphere before it really counted in the playoffs. Teams that talk about going to the playoffs and playing in championships should welcome the opportunity for a tough FCS team game where they could see how they measure up the competition.

Re: MSU vs NDSU 2013 rematch
It's not as easy as it would seem to have 6 home games, which quite frankly I think most people are just taking for granted these days. EWU, Weber, SHSU and many other teams only get to play 4 regular season home games a year with 2 FBS because that's what their finances dictate. Or we could go the route of PSU and play a NAIA and a DII school just to get more home games and put ourselves in a terrible spot come playoff selection time. No thank you. Count me firmly in the camp of 1) enjoying our guaranteed 6 home games and 2) putting ourselves in the best possible chance of making then hosting in the playoffs. Yes, this sucks for NDSU and they have every right to be PO'd, and I agree that this is a major missed opportunity for the FCS to have an early season featured matchup that would have garnered national attention, but oh well. It’s going to pay for our 2 OOC home games that will include an FCS opponent, so I’m already over it. Bring on SMU, a newly minted Big East school in one of our prime recruiting areas.

Your entire post is confusing....and you do realize as much as we all (with our huge egos) would love to believe we have some control over bobcat football and what choices they make, we are a message board.
Moral of the story is call out Peter Fields or Cruzado.
Also for the record I completely understand why this is done and actually agree with it from a money perspective and seeding in the playoffs and getting more home games. I am EXTREMELY bummed though because its only a few hours for me to drive over to Fargo and the family and I were going to come over and experience the game and the game day atmosphere so in the respect this sucks.
You saying you own Bozeman is on the same level as I own Washington D.C.
I love the Bobcats and the Miami Hurricanes an unhealthy level
