I love people who dream big. Why not? Who knows where the money would come from. For sure the State of Montana, Gallatin County, and the City of Bozeman can't afford it. But we could get a sweet stadium addition out of the the deal. And maybe a new arena too!

Dear effing God, no.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Bozeman needs a Putin in the Federal government to send about $50B ... just without all of the dickhead KGB dictator stuff.

I saw this a few days ago on Facebook. Didn't want to laugh too loud in case someone was actually taking it seriously.

It would be interesting to see how the lodging all worked out for the small towns that have hosted it in the past (Lillihammer, etc.). In the event that something actually did happen in MT, I'd think they'd need to spread events out over Butte, Bozeman, and Billings (and maybe even Missoula) to take advantage of lodging and infrastructure. Having 100% of the events in a place like Bozeman/Big Sky wouldn't seem to be feasible. It seems like most Olympics are pretty spread out, probably for that same reason.vike_king wrote:Can you imagine all the hotels that would have to be built?CatBlitz wrote:To rebuild the infrastructure afterward?BelgradeBobcat wrote:It would be the mother of all stimulus projects.
But that said ... yeah, long shot at best, and no money to make it happen.

We can just open our homes to the world...and make a killing renting out every spare bedroom, tool shed, and chicken coop! It'll be just like the Bakken.vike_king wrote: Can you imagine all the hotels that would have to be built?

West Yellowstone also has about 12,000 beds right now, and world class cross country ski trails. If places like Lillehammer, Sarajevo, and Sochi can host, then Bozeman certainly could host.Bay Area Cat wrote:It would be interesting to see how the lodging all worked out for the small towns that have hosted it in the past (Lillihammer, etc.). Even Sun Valley would not be able to get it done in this day and age. Unless you a country trying to buid a new resort area, you need an awful lot of infrastructure to get it done. In a place like Bozeman, hotels would not get built so much as new dormitories.

Re: Winter Olympics 2026 in Bozeman
The problem with Olympics in general is that you have to build all those nice facilities and then after the games are over, you have to find ways to use them, and most often they don't get used. Although I kind of like the idea, I think it would be a waste of money.

There are sometimes some lingering positive economic effects from those facilities, as this article details. I imagine those impacts are greatest when the country hasn't hosted one for a long time, though.

I agree, but it would no more be a waste than the bailouts.WeedKillinCat wrote:The problem with Olympics in general is that you have to build all those nice facilities and then after the games are over, you have to find ways to use them, and most often they don't get used. Re: Winter Olympics 2026 in Bozeman
I've done no analysis at all, but my perception is that a town the size of Bozeman is today, could have held the winter Olympics maybe up through the Lake Placid games (1980). But since then the winter Olympics have gotten so much bigger. Back then speed skating was an outdoor sport, now you need a huge indoor venue. And there's lots more new indoor sports like Curling, short track speed skating, women's hockey, team figure skating (whatever that is) and so on. So you'd need a lot more expensive indoor arenas with ice sheets. There's also way, way more athletes so you'd need a much bigger Olympic village.

Re: Winter Olympics 2026 in Bozeman
I just can't see how it would happen. The roads from here to Bridger Bowl and Big Sky would be difficult to upgrade, plus there would have to be a lot of upgrades in everything: arenas, housing, infrastructure. I hate to be the Debbie Downer here, but I just don't see it happening. This is what I think could happen, as shown in the video below.

This would be one of the worst possible things that could happen to Bozeman.
