Right now the griz are beating Sac, but PSU is beating Weber.

But do we really care? I guess I really don't, because we all know what will happen in the first round of the Big Sky tourney anyway.
I need the 'Cats to make the tournament so I can get credentials so I can make freelance money covering all the other teams...
Is it sad that I care more about this than about seeing my favorite basketball team in the tournament?

Good riddance to yet another wasted season. Glad I never let myself get excited about this year, even when they won a few early. I knew what was coming well in advance... hell, we ALL did! I just don't know what Fields needs to see in order to make a change. Or, preferably, Cruzado will see what needs to be changed and she will get rid of Fields AND Huse. But at this point, I kind of doubt it.

Portland State beat Weber State tonight so that means we have to beat Sac State and a lame duck ISU team has to beat PSU in Portland for MSU to make the tourney.

In other news SUU beat UND tonight in Cedar City for their first D-1 win of the season. Nice win for a hard luck team that was a little bit better than their record indicates.

I was trying to look at tournament scenarios, mostly because the conference race is so interesting. I'm not sure if I even care that the Cats make the tournament or not. I used to be relatively optimistic, but I do hope this season comes to a merciful end soon. However, this is how some of the tournament breaks down.

Weber State is the number one seed. They win the outright title with a win at Eastern Washington or a UM loss at NAU.

The Griz would lock up the two seed with a win. Should they lose, due to tiebreakers, UND would be the two seed, NAU would be three, and UM would be four. If UM wins, UND would be the three seed and NAU would fall back into a potential 11-9 pack. UM will either be 2 or 4 and UND will be either 2 or 3.

UND is done with their regular season at 12-8. NAU could reach 12-8 with a win over the Griz, but they were swept by UND in the regular season.

Once we get past the number four spot, it gets ugly. Eastern Washington, Portland State, and Northern Colorado are all 10-9 and would advance with a win. Eastern hosts Weber, Portland State hosts Idaho State, and Northern Colorado is at Southern Utah on Saturday. I'm not even going to try and guess on seeding. We'll see on Saturday.

The loser of Saturday's Bobcat game against Sacramento State is out of tournament contention. The winner stays alive unless PSU, EWU, and UNC all win.

If it gets to a 10-10 jumble with four teams, it would start with records against all tied teams. A second tiebreaker would be a win over number 1 seed Weber State. Here would be the scenario if each team finishes 10-10.
PSU- 4-2 vs. EWU, MSU, UNC (swept by MSU, swept UNC and EWU), 5-1 vs. EWU, Sac, UNC, beat Weber State
EWU- 4-2 vs. PSU, MSU, UNC (swept by PSU, swept UNC and MSU), 3-3 vs. PSU, Sac, UNC
UNC- 1-5 vs. EWU, PSU, MSU (swept by EWU and PSU, split with MSU), 1-5 vs. EWU, PSU, and Sac, beat Weber State

Sac- 3-3 vs. EWU, PSU, UNC (split with all three), beat Weber State
MSU- 3-3 vs. EWU, PSU, UNC (swept by EWU, swept PSU, split with Northern Colorado)

A four way tie at 10-10 would eliminate Northern Colorado first based on combined records. At that point, PSU, EWU, and the MSU-Sac winner would go. Then it goes to head-to-head for seeding. If UNC loses, MSU's chances get much better. Portland State appears to be in the best shape to get in. There are a ton of scenarios at play here and I don't feel like breaking down every one of them. I hope the Big Sky comes out with a scenario guide here before I do.

Idaho State was eliminated tonight, but they're a team on the rise.

Southern Utah finally got a conference win-good for them!

If MSU does somehow get in they will probably get to lose the the griz one more time in the 2-7 matchup...if my calculations are correct.
That would be great...then we could finish the 2013-14 academic year 0-6 against UM in the three major sports. :(

For anyone who cares: http://www.bigskybball.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Jon Reed has a nice summation of all the tie-breaker senarios. Several of which involved MSU...if by some miracle we win at Sac State today.

To update today's scenarios, Eastern Washington lost to Weber State. They are at 10-10. Northern Colorado is in since they beat Southern Utah. Portland State will advance due to winning tiebreakers with other teams. I think that Sacramento State advances with a win. Eastern Washington will go with a Bobcat win.

As for the Cats, I don't see any scenario where we're going to the tournament. It will be the Cats' first time missing out on the going since 2004.

The Big Sky Conference tweeted that MSU has been eliminated.

#BigSkyMBB: MSU has been eliminated from postseason contention. Boils down to SAC or EWU making tourney.

Probably a good thing. I get tired of reading about how "MSU qualifies for BSC tourney for fifth straight year" as if that's some kind of an accomplishment. Personally, I think the best show of accomplishment for a BSC team is winning the regular season and hosting the tournament. Winning it on top of that is another feather in your cap. It's just kind of insane that the Big Sky has a team in the NCAA tourney, but if you win the league, host the tourney, win the tourney and go, you're somewhat deserving. One of these years a BSC team is going to flat luck out and get to the Sweet 16. It's almost happened before. Either the BSC team beats some high seed in an upset like a #14 over a #3 and there's another upset in the same side of the bracket, such as #10 beat #7 and #10 is from MWC. That puts BSC #14 vs. #10 and they win that. UM almost did it that year they got an #11 seed and were slotted against #6 Nevada and won. They had a shot vs. BC. Idaho State got to the Elite 8 and UM to the Sweet 16, but that was before they even invented the nicknames "Elite 8" and "Sweet 16" and there were only 32? or 40? teams in the tourney.

Most BSC champs would have a hard time finishing second to last in the ACC, SEC, B1G, PAC, Big 12. I'd have more respect for the BSC if the NCAA would create a FCS equivalent for BB.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Good riddance. MSU doesn't deserve to play in the intramural playoffs, much less the Big Sky tourney.

Good news, and good riddance to yet another great season. At least I won't have to waste a couple minutes this week checking to see if MSU lost by 20 or 30 points in its first round game.

Well we're down by nearly 20 (17) at half so it wouldn't have mattered.

We finished with an impressive 84-59 loss. I'm as optimistic as anybody but I'm glad it's over. I'm not sure what direction the team goes from here. I can't imagine there will be any big changes but who knows. It's over.
