We were a day too late for my number 1 choice as well. Surely Phil Jackson would have jumped at the MSU job instead of the. Knicks if he had known of the opening!lutecat wrote:Bruce Pearl was hired by Auburn and he was my choice. Oh well. ; )

Wojo is basically the "coach in waiting" at Duke. I like your aiming high but that one might be a bit of a stretch.Mtcatfan wrote:Steve Wojciechowski. Duke assistant coach.

But the last place team in the ACC would most likely win the BSC.MSU01 wrote:I'd guess finishing dead last in the ACC might have something to do with it!

I'd love that in theory. In practice, they don't have the roster for it.TomCat88 wrote:I'd like to see MSU bring in someone who emphasizes physical basketball. A core of rebounding, pounding it inside and defense.

Went 131-61 at Butler with a couple sweet 16 appearances before leaving for Iowa. Currently at NAIA Marion in Indiana.

True, but you had said in your first post that you didn't know why he was fired from VT. I was just saying that the last place finish was probably why, especially in such a competitive environment as the ACC.wapiti wrote:But the last place team in the ACC would most likely win the BSC.MSU01 wrote:I'd guess finishing dead last in the ACC might have something to do with it!
My gut instinct from watching Fields' press conference from yesterday is that he'd like to get an assistant from a successful larger program to come here - perhaps someone similar to NAU's Jack Murphy, who was an assistant at Memphis in his early 30's when hired and is turning NAU into a winner quickly. I am interested to see what the search process will be like, and if there will be any public component to it. I think speed of the search process is certainly important, especially at this time of year when there are plenty of other job openings. Having been involved pretty regularly with hiring committees at my current job, I would say that the worst thing to do in the hiring process is to have unnecessary delays that lengthen the time frame of the search, as that often results in someone else offering your top candidates a job before you even get the chance.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
Still throwing out the name Jeff Culver from UCCS - The Mountain Lions finish the 2013-14 season with program records in wins (21), longest winning streak (10 games) and best conference tournament seed (third). UCCS rewrote the record books with the first home playoff game, first playoff win, first conference tournament championship appearance and first NCAA tournament appearance. Played #1 ranked Metro State in Playoffs and only lost by 4. Culver has had an unbelievable career so far and turned the UCCS program around in two short years!

You mean Cruzado wants to fill the job quickly. Fields wouldn't dare make a "bad" hire that he couldn't write off as "well, it was the committee's choice..."MSU01 wrote:It was interesting to watch the Fields press conference video from today. The most interesting thing to me was that when asked about the hiring process for the new coach, he seemed to indicate that they are looking to fill the job quickly and might not go through the full process they have in the past with publicization of a list of finalists and public forums during the interview process. It makes me wonder if Fields has one or more guys in mind already who he wants to go after.

I don't have a name but I would like a more uptempo team. I am not sure we can get the big power type players to come here. We can certainly get tweeners that can run and defend. I'd also like to get more reliable shooters. Holm seems to fit that mold but in the past we had Sprinkle, Brown, Conway, Sullivan, Hatler... And they were all Montana kids. Has the basketball in Montana fallen so far that there aren't these kinds of kids out there? Huse seemed to only recruit the bigger Montana kids.

You don't see the Sprinkle,Brown, Faaborg type players much anymore. Montana has become a football state, and most of the best athletes concentrate on that. I do think we have some great Big/forwards coming next year, but we will see if they stick, or bail now that we are switching coaches.dwainegf wrote:I don't have a name but I would like a more uptempo team. Whomever it is....he needs to have more control over who he recruits within reason. Ash makes calculated decisions on players like Anthony Knight......the new BB coach needs to have more of a say in who he gets. I think Fieods had a hand in approving recruits in the past.

If only Phil Jackson hadn't taken that job with the Knicks.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
How about a couple of D-2 coaches. Ryan Looney of Seattle Pacific has an amazing record and Greg Clink of Chico State is in the d-2 national tournament. Looney won the league and end of season tournament in the league MSU Billings is in.
