Local Prospects

Post by bobcat99 » Mon Mar 24, 2014 4:18 pm

Are there any local players that are looking at playing here?

I know Bozeman had Oliver Carr, the Weidenaar kid and Brad Huse's son, but I don't know if any of them are good enough or even looking at playing here. Can't think of anybody that Belgrade had. I've heard that DeJong kid from Manhattan is getting looks from UM and MSU, but he didn't play his senior year so I don't know if that's true or not.

Selfishly I want MSU to have more Montana players, just don't know if there are any.

Oliver Carr has committed to play at Carroll College. Gavin DeJong was getting serious interest from Montana and Montana State the summer following his sophomore year, but injuries have slowed his recruitment.

Christian Evans from Bigfork has received interest from Montana, Eastern Washington and North Dakota State.

Adam Huse is a solid player, but he's not a D-I talent.

The following players were all-state in Class AA:
Carson Dummer, Capital (Tech)
Tres Tinkle, Hellgate (getting ACC looks)
Evan Epperly, Glacier (Griz football)
Kyle Harrington, Helena Capital (received interest from Carroll)
Hunter Beto, sr., Helena Capital
Kendal Manuel, jr., Billings Skyview (Could be a borderline Big Sky guy with more development)
Oliver Carr, sr., Bozeman (Carroll)
Jayse McLean, sr., Great Falls CMR (NDSU baseball)
Jared Samuelson, jr., Billings West; (Same thing as Manuel. Fringe talent.)
Brendan Howard, fr., Great Falls (Could be better than his brother).

The only Class A guy with college potential is Dane Warp out of Havre. But he's a stud quarterback who I guarantee ends up in the Big Sky as a football player.

Josh Sandry is a junior at Bigfork. He'll be a college prospect in some sport by the time it's all said and done.

Samuelson could be a great BSC player with the right situation.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Huse is a Junior. I am in no position to challenge Colter in his opinion of Adam, but he is the best shooter I have seen; so smooth and natural. He is also a very very smart player.

How long have you been watching Montana high school ball? It would take some amazing talent to be mentioned ahead of Shann Ferch, Craig Finberg or Bill Pilgeram.

He could certainly get there and he does have potential. He averaged 9.2 points per game and was Bozeman's fourth-leading scorer on a team that didn't make the state tournament. He scored 129 points on 95 field goals, so he's an efficient player. He was 45-of-95 from the field (47.4 percent), including 22-of-46 from 3-point land. 47.8 percent from deep is nothing to scoff at and was second in Class AA this season.

He is a smooth and natural player, but he doesn't have the physical maturity or prowess yet to be considered a Division I prospect.

Warp is certainly the best scorer in Class A, and should get some college looks (D2, maybe D1). Byrden Boehning is another Class A player for Glendive who's already signed his LOI with the Griz.

Seems like the consensus from around the state is that this year's crop of Seniors wasn't particularly strong, and that there is more College level ability (maybe not all D1 or Big Sky) in the Junior or Sophomore classes.

mslacat,
Does he play anything like his dad? I watched his dad at the state basketball tournament as a senior and thought the griz made a mistake offering him and he proved me wrong. He was an animal on the boards and ended up being much more athletic than he showed at that tournament. I for one would be happy if he followed in his dad's footsteps.

His dad was a horse, undersized for a typical 5 but solid at the 4. From what I've seen his son is better suited at the 3. He reminds me of the Sullivan kid from west you guys had in the mid 90s.

I thought Shawn broke his foot during the first game at State his senior year.

I recall that as well. Prior to that I just not see anything that jumped out at me. I remember him on crutches as well. He looked big but soft to me. I am so glad I don't know anything about anything.
