I think its similar for a lot of potential head coach's...its a great opportunity. We haven't had as many wins lately as we would all like, however that doesn't diminish that this is a D1 head coaching position in a great area. Personally I would much rather take over a program that is struggling and go in and turn it around, then take over a program like Butler that has been fantastic and now wasn't even in the tourney. Expectations on the program are low right now, we need someone with the confidence, connections, and recruiting to get us back to where we need to be.bobcat99 wrote:His brother is current NBA player Mike Miller.1CatFan23 wrote:How about Ryan Miller.... Former Associate Head coach at Auburn, has worked for some big time coaches....Alford, Calipari, Kellogg...has some serious recruiting connections. I believe he has recruited or coached 3 current NBA players. great ties to Australia (recruited Bairstow and Greenwood to Lobos) AAU circuit (his cousin has a team out of Memphis) and obviously the coaching connections from being at Pepperdine, Missouri, New Mexico, and Auburn. I know he is interested.
Here is his bio

Young motivated and players would love working for him
Not a bad connection to have at all. Not sure why he would come here, to be honest with you.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
Both Bone and Graham could bring ready made staffs with him. Bone his WSU staff and Graham could bring himself, Tim Cleary and Andy McClouskey who coached for Graham at Boise. They are currently at Pacific Oregon. That BSU staff did win the WAC and went to an NCAA Tournament.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
While I think Graham is a pretty good coach. I think the main reason he was let go at BSU was due to the continuing lack of interest and indifference of the program. I don’t know that he is going to bring the excitement needed to turn things around.
I would actually like to see us take a chance on a young energetic coach, maybe even someone who hasn’t had D1 head coaching experience. However, I think Fields will likely play it safe…..

Unfortunately for Sprinkle and Orser I think Fields is going to be leaning toward with someone with-out ties to Montana or Montana State. I really do not have a problem if Fields does go this route as long as we get a good coach, but I would recommend if this is the case, that the new coach take a strong look at asking Bobby Howard to come on board as his third assistant. Someone like Howard could be a great asset to the new coach adjusting to MSU.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
I was talking to one of the griz coaches and he said they're not even trying to recruit the young Howard because he's a lock for MSU. This was before Huse left, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. But having Bobby at least involved in the program would be huge. Gotta have a couple more MT kids on the roster. It's one thing to have all out of state guys...it's another to have that and always lose!wbtfg wrote:Not to mention he has a superstar younger brother.mslacat wrote:Unfortunately for Sprinkle and Orser I think Fields is going to be leaning toward with someone with-out ties to Montana or Montana State. Ive heard they have their top two canidates on campus right now? Sounds like if one of them takes the job, they will announce hopefully this week! From what I understand though its not a "Montana" guy...does that help or hurt a guy like Bobby Howard? Besides his brother being very good...what does Bobby do to help us win a conference championship? Dont get me wrong, i think his time here was great but I just hope the new guy can brings some guys in here that can get it done outside of Montana.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
What having someone like Howard on the staff does for a coach it can help fill the gap a coach from out side Montana and MSU may have moving to Montana. Bobby knows the State, he knows MSU and he knows the politics this can help the coach hit the ground running. As far as Howard goes he is just beginning his coaching carrier so there would not be much of a cost to get him here. He would be the third assistant or even a graduate assistant. Last year I am told he really wanted the grad assistant spot that Huse filled with Luke Fennelly. It is just my opinion but I do think it is important not to be totally perceived as an "outside Montana" coaching staff.MSUfan4life wrote:kennethnoisewater wrote:I was talking to one of the griz coaches and he said they're not even trying to recruit the young Howard because he's a lock for MSU. Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
Agreed on the last point. There has to be some tie to Montana. I talk to people all the time who realize you're not going to win with a bunch of Montana kids in basketball, but people want to see some Montanans playing. Even Tinkle hasn't exactly gone hard after Montana kids. They're winning (for the most part), so people are willing to forgive him of that, but we've seen in football how big of a point of pride it is to have more Montana kids than the other guys. And while pride doesn't win championships or get you to the Big Dance, I think pride in MSU basketball is virtually gone, and that would be a good start.mslacat wrote:What having someone like Howard on the staff does for a coach it can help fill the gap a coach from out side Montana and MSU may have moving to Montana. Take Ken Bone Name off the list. He was asked to apply but choose not to. I am told he did not feel his "style" of coaching is what MSU is looking for"

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Hello Beautiful Bozeman,
I have it from a reliable source that Bone would be interested in living and coaching in Bozeman. But, he has NOT been contacted.
He is a good coach and should be considered.

Basically in my experience it almost always the person needing or wanting a job responsibility to apply for that job. I know someone who I respect a great deal who has talked to Bone with-in the last week and they were told by Bone that he was not going to applyEssaBeast wrote:Hello Beautiful Bozeman,

Greetings Beautiful Bozeman (2),
The source is extremely, like VERY CLOSE to Bone. If MSU AD reaches out to Bone, he would be receptive to speaking to them about the job.
Bone would be a good fit and proven Big Sky winner. Yes, he had some problems recruiting kids to WSU. But, really Pullman?....not the place anyone wants to live for 4 years. It is NOT Beautiful Bozeman for sure!

I don't know about you, but I've never gotten a job by sitting around passively and waiting for the employer to come find me. If Bone wants to be MSU's coach, he knows where to send his resume.EssaBeast wrote:Greetings Beautiful Bozeman (2),

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
First of all, best wishes to all Bobcat fans in your search for a new coach. Very important decisions have to be made.
That being said, the reason I came to your board was because I heard TJ Otzelberger was a candidate for the job. And by reading some posts on here, it must be true. Although you a be to give the appearance of doing a search, if I was your AD, and TJ would accept, I'd end the interview process right now. TJ is maybe the finest young man in basketball today. As fans, you'd all love him.
Although TJ is at Washington now, he was at Iowa State for 7 years. He spent 4 years with Greg McDermott, the current head coach at Creighton and father of the player of the year candidate Doug McDermott, and spent 3 years under Fred Hoiberg, current coach of the Cyclones. TJ is one of the top recruiters in the country, works tirelessly, and is the most like able and approachable young man I know.
I have been a Cyclone season ticket holder for more years than I care to remember, and if there is one assistant I will always remember, it would be TJ. He would be a great fit for your community, and a great ambassador to your school. He will make you a winner, I can guaranty that. And he will do it the right way.
He was the finalist for the South Dakota job last week, and it came down to him and Craig Smith the assistant at Nebraska. USD chose Smith, but I think they made a mistake. Not that Smith isn't qualified, it's just that TJ is just that good. I know this young man very well, and I would offer myself to answer any questions you may have about him. You will see talent like you haven't seen in a long time come to Bozeman. He personally recruited the Big 12 player of the year, Melvin Ejim, and no one else in the league had even heard of him. TJ recognized his potential and latched on.
I will check back in, but if anybody on this board has any influence whatsoever in the department, do all you can to get TJ the job. Ryan Miller also interviewed for the job at USD, but didn't do well. He's nothing like TJ.
Good luck in your hunt.
