Don Holst ??
Kennedy actually left to go coach Towson (better conference, probably more money I'm guessing, and less whiny boosters bitching about east-coasters). He was a great recruiter but didn't do much with the talent he recruited. Sure left the cupboard LOADED for the incoming coach K though!

Holst is the only coach who I can think of who was ousted and didn't either leave for another program or just retire. Taylor left to become an assistant coach so it could be that was encouraged as well.

Looking at the list the original poster posted...wow... to be honest I didn't think Kramer should have been fired, and same with Durham (guess he resigned wasn't really fired). Of course my opinion on Durham being encouraged to GTFO probably has a lot to do with the direction the program headed after Durham...

And then there was that incredible game versus Idaho State in 1971. Willie Humes of Idaho State lit the Fieldhouse up - scoring 53 points. Bill Brickhouse and Willie Weeks each threw in 38 for the Cats in 105-92 Bobcat victory. Remember this was before a shot clock or a 3 point shot line. It was the most entertaining basketball game I have ever attended.

As for Brent Wilson I agree he did not have a stellar college career but he was a big time recruit coming out of high school. My take on Hulst was that he was a great recruiter but a poor game coach. On the other hand I think Rich Juarez was a very good game coach who got the most of his talent but a poor recruiter who could not bring in the talent to work with.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was when they demolished the Idaho State frosh and their coach pulled their team in the fourth quarter and walked off the court challenging one of the refs to fight over his calls, ref was some guy named Sonny Holland!!! Pretty hilarious!!!

I was a freshman at MSU during this time. Freshman were not allowed to play on the varsity so there was a separate Bobkitten team. They played a full schedule, just like the varsity. As I recall the Kitten team went undefeated and actually scrimmaged the varsity twice, winning both games.

Another interesting thing looking back on those days is the teams that came into the Fieldhouse. Houston, New Mexico State, Washington, Creighton, Utah State all played the Cats in Bozeman between 1969 and 1971. Several of those teams played here more than once.

Kennedy made the tournament as Depaul's head coach in 2000, and led Florida State to a Sweet 16, an Elite Eight and an NIT runner up finish prior to that. But after taking the Montana job in 2002, he incurred 10 straight losing seasons. What a strange career.
