"I wish him the best at Montana State," said outgoing senior center Waverly Austin in a phone interview, describing Fish as a "player's coach." Fish worked with Oregon's forwards and centers in practice.

"You can have a good relationship on and off the court. He's funny but also very serious about the game. I think it's important for coaches to have that relationship, it brings a comfort level for a player. That's what he can do for that team."

Johnson is averaging 7.5 ppg on 32% shooting.

Yay?

Their 13.5 PPG leading scorer was signed by Oklahoma State, so it must be a good team he's on currently. I really have no idea how good he is, but Creighton is a strong enough program that if they signed him out of HS, he must have some talent. Haven't seen anything more on this other than the one tweet, so who knows if this is at all accurate.

Uh oh, an Oregon Duck? Don't we have a contract with that other sports clothing company?

I've known Fish for many years. He seemingly has contacts everywhere ... he will bring in players. Really good guy that has always been a great recruiter because of his ability to connect with people and build relationships. I came to this board to check things out when he was reported as a candidate. I will now be following the Bobcats and pulling for them to do well.

The latter of course. By all accounts Fish is taking a significant pay cut to come here as he was making over $200K a year at Oregon, so it would seem Fields did a good job attracting quality candidates given the budget he has to work with.

Fish went to high school in Seymour Indiana, as did John Mellencamp, so maybe he can get him to come in and do some concerts before games to draw back some of us older rocker/basketball fans to MSU basketball.

 Not sure 7 figures for a guy like Izzo or Calipari was ever really on the table. I will say this: I think the administration was able to really reach deep and find a way to pay the guy (at least close to) what he deserves. I'm impressed we were able to land a very high quality guy with a ton of big time experience with a seemingly limited budget.

My apologies to Peter Fields. I doubted his ability to bring in a top flight coach, but I can't imagine
a better choice than Brian Fish, and not only that, but actually landing him.

Go Cats. I'm ready for some new excitement as our program
begins to rebuild.

Oregon was kicking around Wisconin pretty good in the NCAAs until Wisconsin woke up. Now Wiskey is in the Final Four.

I think I've got to give Fields some credit. This seems like a great hire. Will be interesting to find out what kind of compensation they offered him. Maybe they convinced him with incentives he could get close to what he was making.

Welcome to MSU coach!

He may have jumped at the opportunity to be a head coach. Prove himself a winner here and he could move up a level.

Or (and this is where you will see my inner child and his big dreams) he can make MSU a winner, turning MSU into a perennial top-tier mid-major, bringing in tons of fans and tons of money from around the state/region, allowing MSU to pay him a lot more down the road and thus keeping him for a long time.
