Mo vs. Dom at RB

Post by GavinDonos » Mon Sep 13, 2004 10:34 am

A lot of folks are saying that J.D. didn't seem to have very good speed. I thought there were at least three plays where he displayed really good speed for a back his size. He had the screen pass where he ran for about 15 yards in the first half. Then, at the very beginning of the second half, he had two really good first down runs, one of which he burned several players around the end. He did have a few runs for negative yards, however; but on most of those, it seemed like he had two guys bearing down on him in the backfield as soon as the handoff was completed. By the way, did anyone notice the trail of Adams State players that were littering the field after that touchdown run of his... it was hilarious!

I was also impressed with Morris' running. He displayed great speed and great moves. It's easy to see why he is everyone's favorite as he is quite flashy. We didn't see much of Gathing, and only a few runs by Beal...

I think the main problem in our running game last week was OL issues.

Yeah, I'm not putting Domineck down at all. I hope they both are studs. I guess you can't really compare their two styles. Milton just hit the hole faster I thought which should make his runs more consistent in the postive yard range? Downhill runner? I was impressed with Domineck's cutting ability though. I think he is still just a tad out of shape and should round into form in the next 2-3 games I bet. He wasn't in the Spring drills so is probably a little behind on the pass blocking/pickups as well right now. That is another reason why Milton may supplant him early in the season. But, yeah ... having 2-3 good RB's is totally fine by me :)

GavD: I think you're exactly right with your OL comment. I talked to Birkeland after the game and he said he, for one, had the jitters real bad. I imagine Jensen and Figueroa were the same way.

Understandable for guy who walked on as a undersized def. lineman, then gets switched to off. guard this past spring and earns a full ride to run onto the field and see a packed house to be wiggin' out a bit. That's pressure and must've been a bit overwhelming.

MSU is fine at the skill positions, the line needs get comfortable. I wouldn't expect 400 yds/game, but they'll be able to compliment the defense. They are apt to lose this weekend and next, but by the time the ISU game rolls around, as they have in the past, they'll probably be ready.

I too agree that Milton was the most impressive RB this last weekend. But, I think that Gathing would be nice to have a good look at as well, because his size and strength can be a definite asset in the shorter running game. I must say that he had a killer block on a punt return, not quite reminiscent of the Ryan Elliot block last year that made people cringe, but still very big. I think they have a lot of talent, and hopefully they will showcase it more this next week.

Yes, it was Gathing who laid the wood to one of the punt coverage guys for Adams State. Does anyeone else remember the hit that Elliot had last year on that punter? I think it was against Idaho State, but I may be wrong. Anyways, I won't be able to be there at the game this weekend, but cheer hard for me.
