Predictions for Cal Poly at MSU

Post by SonomaCat » Mon Sep 13, 2004 1:48 pm

My prediction:

MSU 20
Cal Poly 14

MSU recovers at least 3 Cal Poly fumbles and the offense scores 3 TD's on short drives (missing one PAT).

The defense holds Cal Poly, giving up one TD in the air. The other CP TD will be something flukish.

That's my best shot.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I too think we are gonna force 2-3 TO's on them as well. If so, then the offense has to punch it in. We CANNOT GIVE UP ANY SP teams play/TD's this year on this team if we are going to win.

Judging by some peoples' comments about the offense, the score may well be Cats 4, Poly 2 in 19 overtimes.

I think the offense will be better against Cal Poly and good enough to combine well with the great defense once Conference play begins. This will be a tough game though...

MSU 17
Poly 14

although the score could easily be reversed.

Since this is a Bobcat website, I can understand all of the predictions of a Bobcat win. However, I think you guys are short changing the Cal Poly offense. We've scored an average of 38.5 points the last two games, and even though we run the option, we're not Adams State!

With a score similar to our victory over MSU last year, I predict:

Cal Poly SLO - 24
Montana St - 16

I would say Montana St 17, but I think your kicking woes will continue with another missed PAT!

Go Mustangs!

Welcome to the board CPM! :D I'm guessing our D will be the toughest you've seen yet this year, and maybe will see, and I know yours will be the toughest we've seen! Should be a good battle. Not smacking here, but how many of your points have been scored by your offense? Just wondering as I heard you had some great defensive plays that are putting points on the board. BTW, our O has only scored 13 so far... Good Luck! 8)

Well catatac, it's 7 TD's for the offense vs 4 TD's for the defense. I'll be the first to admit, against ISU the defense really won the game. Last year we were only held to 14 points or less three times, and we scored 30+ points in six games. I guess that's why I'm surprised at all of the predictions of Cal Poly scoring 14 or less.

Go Mustangs!

I have to agree. Both teams will probably score at least 21 points. Cal Poly's defense was pressuring our QB the entire game and we were unable to pick up thier blitz packages. That forced Hetherington to make poor decisions.

I am not sure how to predict this game, but it should be close either way.

Facts:
It's not in a dome... That's good!
It's against a flex defense...that's bad!
It's not homecoming...that's good!
It's against a good option team... that's bad!
It's the second game...that's good!
It's non conference..that's bad!
The weather may be bad....that's good!
It's Cal Poly...that's bad!
Cats don't usually play two stinkers in a row...that's good!

We're at home...that's...uh....Hmmm? Not sure!

That's 5 goods, 4 bads, and an "Idunno". Either way it's close. It depends on what team shows up....the one with ability or the one with questionmarks.

Questionmarks: Cal Poly 17-14 in overtime because we miss a field goal!
Ability: Cats 20, Cal Poly 17

Probably because last year our opponents only scored 14 points against us, on average. Also probably a little wishful thinking. I think you'll score more than 14, less than 20.

Great post Helcat!

One giant positive that could come out of the Adams game is that they run the option and run the flex defense. That should prove to be a great primer for the Cal-Poly game. That 3-4 MSU ran on D last week was great against the option I think. We stuffed the middle run option and the speed of our LBs stretched the speed option all the way to the sidelines, look for more of the same this weekend. I think this is the year we finally get it right against the Mustangs. Look for a totally different team suited up in blue and gold Saturday.

I think our kickers miss one or two FGs, but Bolton splits the upright late in the 4th to seal the deal. I think with Bolton working FGs and PATs, we dont miss a PAT Saturday either - which should NEVER be missed! Doroski is finally what we've been looking for on kickoffs by the way. Lot of hangtime, and tons of distance. If he had any accuracy on FGs, he'd be at a bigtime D-1A school for sure.

Yes that is a lot of sugar coating and optimistic thinking, but I think we will see the real MSU team step forward this week. [-o<

I went to the game last year @CP and watched the CATS struggle. Thge offense was vanilla, and they had a tough time covering a punt that probably cost them the ball game. With the experience of playing a similar type team in ASC, maybe we can get it right this year and give the 'stangs a good thumping. Our O needs to prove it can get it done. Let's not be like Ohio State, squeeking one out each week. Let's put the boots to some people and let our D speak for itself!! :D

"One giant positive that could come out of the Adams game is that they run the option"

Only one problem with that comment. It isn't the same option offense and 2nd as the Cal Poly fan said, "Cal Poly isn't Adams state."

It's like saying that San Diego runs the same Pro offense as Kansas City, so we stoped San Diego we can stop Kansas City. Not so fast my friend.

Before flamming me remember I picked the cats to win.

No - here is some sugar-coating...

MSU 42
Cal Poly 14

I think that Travis will be back on track and that the offense will be much more smooth with people running the correct routes and being where they are supposed to be. We'll get to see the first Lulay to Lulay touch down and we'll have one running and one additional passing score as well. Williams will run back the first punt of the day and we'll have two defensive touchdowns. Bolton will nail all the PAT's

Sheesh, we definitely looked rusty at the first game and there were undoubtedly a lot of things to work on if we are going to get anywhere this year, but i'm glad the coaches aren't as gloomy as some of us fans.

I still have memories of horribly empty stands, lack of enthusiasm on the sideline, and hopes that we wouldn't lose TOO badly each week. It doesn't hurt to believe!

Go Cats!

Like I said before, Dennis Lulay told me that Tyler is redshirting...other than that, the sugar tastes good!

I can see it now... Travis throws a bomb deep in the air, runs super-fast downfield, and catches his own pass! Lulay to, well, Lulay TD!!! LOL
