Only one problem with that comment. It isn't the same option offense and 2nd as the Cal Poly fan said, "Cal Poly isn't Adams state."

It's like saying that San Diego runs the same Pro offense as Kansas City, so we stoped San Diego we can stop Kansas City. Not so fast my friend.

Before flamming me remember I picked the cats to win.
jag - never meant to say that CP was Adams. What I meant to say was the D doesnt have to change much in terms of preparation or philosophy for defending another option team. Cat D is already in an option defense mode, so maybe change a scheme or two, but dont have to tweak the whole package.

And smart move picking the Cats this weekend. Hopefully the real team has knocked the rust off and is ready to go - you too coach Bailey! The biggest question is will the O-line show up. I dont care if those kids were nervous for their first game, after a series or two they should have been knocking the snot out of a D-II school.

I realize that you guys are getting all hyped up for the Cal-Poly game this weekend with all your predictions. I also realize that the Cats are a force to be reckoned with. The tailgates are looking good, the stadium is in great condition, Lulay should have another good year....blah blah blah.

Let's talk about what's REALLY important....

How's Kamber Kelly looking this year?

AAAAOOOOOOGA!!! :-^

CTOWM you are one funny sob. I agree 100% with your last post in this thread.

have to say that I for one am less than optimistic about this weekends game and surprised by all the enthusiasm from other posters on here. just a couple weeks ago we were bashing the griz for being sugar coaters and after our only performance this year, which everyone agrees was abysmal, we are sugar coating the hell out of this team and our odds for Saturdays game. Adams state has only scored about 13 points all season and we think it's a feat that we held them to zero...

Hope I am wrong wrong wrong, and get to eat my words , but I see us dropping this one. cal poly has a fire that we lack and our history of slow starts before we find that fire will repeat.

I don't think CPSLO can score more than 14 in Bobcat Stadium. Basically, we lost last year on a misinterpatation of a "fair catch" punt; got way behind but then came back in the second half to almost win. I also think that was the week coach Joe got busted. As good as their defense is supposed to be, it's my understanding their DC from last year left to take a job somewhere else and that may have an impact. So with all that mumbo, I call it MSU 19 CalPoly 14.

I remember what happened last time Poly came to town. Could have been one of Kane's worst games as the TE caught several passes for big big yardage over the top of the secondary. Didn't the Poly QB and TE get drafted that year?

There's just no telling what Cat offense will show up. Cats have recently been in the business of ending bad streaks, and I think a V this weekend is in order for that reason. It's been decades since the Cats beat Poly, hasn it not? Cats by less than a FG. 50-48, or 10-8.

Well, I'm not going to toot my own horn, but it looks like my prediction wasn't too far off. Here are some of my random observations about the game:

1. I was right. Pretty much everyone on this thread didn't give enough credit to the Cal Poly offense. It wasn't a great offensive showing, but after Cal Poly figured out how to hold on to the ball things started to click.

2. Cal Poly had 13 penalties for 152 yards. Yikes!

3. The MSU receivers made some spectacular catches, but dropped quite a few balls that should have been easy catches.

4. At some point, one would think that MSU would have caught on that they couldn't run the ball up the middle on Cal Poly. I don't know why MSU didn't try to use screen passes to supplement the running game.

5. Whenever the MSU OL would come off the field, one of the MSU coaches would try to impress upon them what they were doing wrong. By the fourth quarter I thought the coach was going to explode from frustration. When he broke his white board over his knee and threw the pieces on the ground I think he crossed the line. I heard an announcement over the loud speaker about how MSU athletes, coaches, and students strive to have the highest level of sportsmanship. What kind of sportsmanship is that? What kind of message does that send to little kids watching the game?

6. The guy that kicks off for MSU has one hell of a leg. I don't think Cal Poly returned any of Lulay's punts. If MSU attempts a FG or PAT, I think all of the MSU fans cross their fingers and hold their breath. After a while a missed FG here and a missed PAT here and there start to add up. It's going to cost MSU a game at some point.

7. Only in Montana can you get a sunburn the first half of the game, and by the fourth quarter you need a jacket to keep the rain off.

8. Speaking of the rain. A couple of drops fall and some of the MSU fans are heading for the gates. I thought that was slightly pathetic.

Mustang~

Great post. I agree with 100% of every single thing you said, with the exception of not being upset about the coach breaking the erase board. Hell, we're probably lucky he didn't shoot himself after that showing!

You would think our OC would start to figure out that we are not able to run the ball up the middle, but he has stubbornly refused to learn that lesson the last three years, so why should we expect any different this season?

Our defense did not play near as well as they are capable of, but on the other hand they forced 4 turnovers and spent most of the day on the field. Giving up 17 points to Cal Poly, with as long as they were on the field, is pretty darn good, certainly good enough to win.

I too was disgusted when fans started leaving with the first couple drops of rain. The rainstorm never did come, by the way. A bunch of us in the student section were yelling at everyone to get back in their seats. Pathetic is right...

BozoneCat, I was surprised when I got back from the game and looked at the statistics. Time of possesion is what really surprised me. MSU 32:31 Cal Poly 27:29.

Cal Poly: One play summed up the game for me. It was when Darrel Jones caught that long pass between two of our defenders in the second half. It only ended up costing us 3 points, but it showed the difference between our players and CPs. The pass was a mile high as the CP QB got pressured and hit as he threw it, and was in the air a long time. Jones was well covered by our corner and a safety. Yet what should have been an interception, or at the very least the pass should have been knocked down, somehow came up as a great catch by Jones. Just one of the great plays he made. My point is that you have a kid who just makes plays-we have no one that is doing anything remotely close to that on our side and never seem to find that type of kid (at least since Junior Adams graduated). Anyway, that Darrel Jones is quite a threat-you guys will miss him after this year!

MSU 20

MSU recovers at least 3 Cal Poly fumbles and the offense scores 3 TD's on short drives (missing one PAT).

The defense holds Cal Poly, giving up one TD in the air. The other CP TD will be something flukish.

That's my best shot.

Game should have been that way. We get the ball inside the 30 twice in first half and come away with no points. That was the game right there. We could have put them down really fast early and made them pass the ball. Baby Steps people, its gonna take some time I think ... I do think we come back from CSU game and then go beat ISU to start the Big Sky Conference at 2-2 (assuming we lose to CSU). All the rest of the games we can win and our offense should be 30-50% improved I hope. They will/should start seeing what our WR'S/RB's do well and what they don't and start game planning that way.

Lulay I think is struggling as he seems to be a very streaky QB and needs a good rythym to boost his confidence. He looks very shaky and a QB who is trying not to make any mistakes and is therefore making them (i.e. so many short armed underthrown passes). I think this CSU game will be good because they can relax and go have fun (no pressure on them this game as they are favored to lose). I also think the OL did a very good job yesterday of pass blocking that FLEX defense of Cal Poly. The running game they need work on still but I thought they did a great job of picking up the flex blitzes yesterday. They wont' see a tougher defense to prepare for this year than Cal Poly so I have good feelings about our pass blocking once we hit the BSC games.

Again, I think if the receivers were consistent, all the issues you brought up about Travis would, I think, go away. It's hard to be confident, when you have, probably, no confidence in your wide outs.
