Please cat, look up once in a while, and see something other than the next step in front of you. Your objection to soccer as a sport, has less to do with the physicality or lack there of, than it does your myoptic view of life.catamaran wrote:So do mimes but I don't see them filling a stadiumSoccer has a larger world wide audience than american football
If you ever stepped foot on a field and tried the game, you would quickly discover how much physically you lack, to even kick the ball straight down the field, much less 'bend it like Beckham'.

I am also a football fan first and really could care less about the World Cup, but I do have to speak up for soccer as I am feeling the effects of my recreational indoor game last night. We have a really nice facility here so I have started playing and let me tell you this...even recreational soccer is a pretty brutal sport. Until you have played it, don't knock it!

I haven't sung in a Broadway musical either ....so does that mean I cant' make fun of showtunes??rtb wrote:I am also a football fan first and really could care less about the World Cup, but I do have to speak up for soccer as I am feeling the effects of my recreational indoor game last night. Just kidding everyone.

I've never understood this: why do Americans have such a hatred of soccer? I'll admit that I'm not really a soccer fan myself either; I've played the game and enjoy playing it but I don't really enjoy it as a spectator sport. However, it seems to me that a lot of peoples' feelings toward soccer go beyond simply not enjoying it; it actually evokes a visceral reaction from people. Why is that?
There are a lot of sports out there that are not really exciting to watch and, for that reason, are not particularly popular, but I've never heard any other sport get made fun of the way soccer does. Why is that? Is it because it's foreign? Or because the rest of the world calls it "football," and Americans resent the audacity of the rest of the world using the name of "our" sport for "their" game? Or is it something else?

I work as an attorney so that I can afford good scotch, which helps me to forget that I work as an attorney.

Of course, you can make fun of anything you want, but there's a difference between making fun of showtunes in the "I don't like that type of music" way, and doing so in the "people who sing on Broadway aren't real musicians" way. If you do the former, you're fine; if you do the latter, and you're not a musician yourself, you'll look like an @ss.HelenaCat95 wrote:I haven't sung in a Broadway musical either ....so does that mean I cant' make fun of showtunes??
Did that analogy make any sense?

Even I have to acknowledge this as a pretty nice piece of smack talk. Kudos.Devlan wrote:So, kinda like the Griz game against South Dakota State?UMclassof2002 wrote:
If I paid for tickets to sit through 90 minutes of that s hit and only got one goal out of the deal, I'd riot as well.

If I have to respond, though, I'll point out that the MSU-Cal Poly game *would* have been as boring as the Griz-SDSU game if CP hadn't lit up the Cats' defense for 38 points.

Actually, Quast, I did get his point; that's why I opened with "Even I have to acknowledge this as a nice piece of smack."mquast53000 wrote:GL I don't think you understood what Devlan said. He was replying to UM2002 saying that he would riot if there was only ONE score in a game. In the Cal Polu-MSU game there were numerous scores... You missed his point. Swing and a miss.
The second part of my post was just me jawing for the sake of jawing (i.e., in the MSU-CP game, there would have been only two scores, (not unlike many soccer games) if CP hadn't scored so many). That's why I opened that part with "If I had to respond, I'd say...") I didn't miss the point, I was just being a dick.

I have to admit, I was on the verge of rioting after the Cat/Cal Poly game. Too bad I was in Harlowton visiting family or I may have taken to the streets (and had a drink or four at the R-Bar)! That was the most disgusting football game I've watched in a long time.
Looks like us Cats may have something to riot about this X-mas season-- MSU basketball (mens and womens)

I apologize for responding to the actual topic here, but I do think it's rather silly that FIFA gets to make up their own formula days before the draw...it's almost as though they can rig it to have whoever they want as the seeded teams. Mexico as a seed is ridiculous, but IMO Netherlands probably deserved that spot over the US. The US just got very unlucky.
