Catholic ? You will have to settle for Monday Night Footbal
I hate to mix Religion and sport but this I found interesting. I was born into a Catholics family, and attended Catholics Kindergarden, 1st and 2nd grade in Glassgow and Havre. I do not consider myself Catholic asince about 8th grade, because I have disagreed with the churches possitions on a few subjects, (its their club, and they make the rules). I have listen to my Mom complain about eating meat on Friday. Debates on abortion, womans place in the church, on and on and on, but through it all I think this will/would be hardest of all the issues for Catholics to come to grips with.
"Pope says Sundays for God, not sports, no NFL on Sundays'"
I would be willing to bet that more people would be willing to give up , and actually do it, Meat on Friday than give up NFL football on Sunday.
So what ever religion you may be could you, would you give up the NFL if your religiuos leader dictated it.

The Pope also tells the overpopulated and AIDS-ridden people in Africa not to use condoms, recently came out against taking people off of life support when brain-dead (apparently god is a ventilator), among other, even more contentious issues. I don't think many people really care what the Pope says anymore, even Catholics. I don't think Sunday football is in much trouble.
Let's just hope the fundamentalist Jews and Seventh Day Adventists don't ever take over the world, though. Then college football would be in trouble....
We'll see where this goes... we may have to move the thread down to the "Hangout" board if it gets too religion-based.

So, despite BAC's wait and see statement, I don't see much of any way that this could ever really relate to Bobcat sports so I am moving this to the Hangout.

msla- I didn't mean to offend, just that part of the reason we set up different forums was so that people could read the stuff they wanted to and skip the rest. If you remember a few weeks ago when someone managed to get a discussion off track into politics and there were many people asking why we were talking about national politics on a Bobcat sports board. By putting stuff like this in the Hangout, it allows people that only want to talk about the Bobcats the ability to just go the Bobcat Athletics forum and not have to weed through unrelated stuff. By the way, I have no problem with the topic or post and actually found it quite interesting and comical in a way, just feel it is better suited to this forum and those that are interested can come here to discuss it.

We Catholics still can't eat meat on Fridays during lent! as fgar as the Pope goes, I know a lot of cathol.ics who disagree with him...but not many of them totally turned away from the church...they sort of take him with a grain of salt ...so to speak!
It's not easy being a Catholic...probably why there are a lot of "Light Catholics" thoses who pick and choose which rules they will abide by and nto abide by.

Like to see BAC and mslacat bag on Catholics, that sure is something new...
I am sure that you both know about Catholicism and can make sound arguments based on your vast knowledge of the 1000 year old religion. Why don't you enlighten us some more with what the Catholic Church does wrong, and how terrible Catholics in the world are.
Point of interest, my child’s Catholic School (K-8 ) rose over $3,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They did so by bringing their change to school and having a bake sale after Mass. I suppose that your atheist buddies' children did the same to help those in need.

And yes, my atheist friends' kids do certainly do lots of charitable work as well ... thanks for asking. I assume you realize even suggesting otherwise would be incredibly silly. And thanks also for opining on comments that are over a year old. Very timely. Did it take this long for you to come up with a pro-Catholic example?
And, of course, there is a big difference between being critical of the Catholic Church (whose history I do know a whole lot about, and was also raised Catholic ... and it is a lot older than 1,000 years, FYI), and being critical of Catholics themselves. I don't like the Church beaurocrats in Rome (and neither do most of the Catholics I know), but I have zero problem with good people who happen to be Catholics.
So if you would like to have an legitimate discussion about the policies and history of the Catholic Church, I would be more than happy to join in. Let me know when you have done your reading on the topic, and we can begin.
You can begin by telling us whether you intend to boycott Sunday NFL football telecasts in deference to the Pope for whom my criticism led to your pointed response.

Without weighing in to the arguement, you might consider the evangelical branch of the Protestant Church, men. Luther started it all with a protest along the lines of the "priesthood of the believer". That being said, the Pope isn't the issue, it is about you walking with God personally and allowing for his leadership in every domain of your life. Including Sunday football. Which in my recent conversations were not high on his list of "David it is time for you to work on..."lists.Bay Area Cat wrote:First off, kudos to those kids and the organizers of that event.G.W.Bush wrote:Like to see BAC and mslacat bag on Catholics, that sure is something new...![]()

With all due deference to the Pope, there are bigger fish to fry than who watches football on Saturday or Sunday and more to do with who you're living for 24/7.

I am sure your atheists friends are really good people. Many atheists are truly humanitarians like you.Bay Area Cat wrote:First off, kudos to those kids and the organizers of that event.G.W.Bush wrote:Like to see BAC and mslacat bag on Catholics, that sure is something new...![]()

The reason I hadn't wrote anything sooner on this topic was simply because I saw those who posted and responded to this thread and chose not to read it (there are a handful of posters that I avoid on BN). When hells bells posted I thought I would check the thread out.
Slip of the typing fingers on the 1,000. Go figure that 1 & 2 are right next to each other.
I also give you thumbs up on your self-proclaimed vast knowledge of the Catholic faith. You were "raised" Catholic therefore you know all about it. You learned all you need to know in what 18 years of your early life while scholars study the faith their entire life and never feel like they know everything. Interesting...
I am not a scholar on the Catholic faith; therefore I will not get into an argument with you about the Catholic Religion. I am sure that you would simply site all the bad things that have happened over the centuries (I acknowledge that there have been some poor leaders and decisions made by the Church over the centuries- I guess not everyone is perfect like you), and yet omit all the good.
I did however like your comment about telling me to freshen up on my Catholic knowledge. Laughable, you are an expect because you were raised Catholic and I am not.
You once again reaffirm my views on your lifestyle and thought process. Keep telling people how wrong they are about their beliefs while you have none of your own. I hope your “faith” gives you comfort in your times of hardship and suffering.

I wasn't citing my being raised a Catholic as the source of my knowledge on the topic. They don't exactly get into that subject matter in CCD. My knowledge comes from reading lots of books on the topic. The fact that I was raised Catholic was an aside to let you know that I've seen things from the inside as well.
Now, George, answer the question. Are you going to watch football on Sundays?
None of my comments had anything to do with faith -- they were matters of church decrees. But I know that you are just being pissy and wanted to take personal shots at me for having an opinion you don't agree with (even though we will soon see that you don't even disagree with me, and that you are rather creating a straw man argument). Your repeated snide comments about atheists as people reinforces that observation. You've done it before, and you will no doubt do it again. In the meantime, I will just stick to the debate itself, and if you come to a point where you are confident in your knowledge of chuch policies and history to discuss the matter, I will welcome the opportunity.
So George, answer the question.

The literature that you read I am sure is unbiased, so I assume that your knowledge is vast and superior to mine.
Enjoy the Da Vinci Code this weekend.

Ah yes, anything with real history in it is surely biased. If only the truth would get out about all of the positive things that came from the Inquisition, eh? Damn liberal media.G.W.Bush wrote:I don’t watch NFL football, only college. If you are truly interested, I can provide you with an interesting list of recommendations. Just let me know.
And I did read the Da Vinci code a few years ago. I don't buy the central revelation of the story (although it does infuse a lot of very good religious history that will benefit everyone to learn), and thought the writing was a complete hack job. I might watch the movie on DVD only to see if Tom Hanks can transform the flat characterization in the book into something much better and be one of the few instances where the movie is better than the book.
And incidently, that Papal decree (or however it is defined) spoke against enjoying any kind of entertainment on Sundays, so just be forewarned. You'd hate to end up enjoying yourself on a Sunday and find yourself slumming it with those people like me who don't think the Pope's opinions on current events and our Sunday activities are relevant. Oh yeah, and the Pope was against the war in Iraq ... so you better fall in line on that point right away as well.

So are you suggesting that history cannot be interpreted or presented in a bias way?
Also, in an earlier post I acknowledged that there have been some poor decisions made by those in the Church, but I would argue that the good out weighs the bad. I surely do not assume that a man is righteous because of the garment and title he bares. But I do believe that the vast majority in the past and the present that serve God are doing so to help better mankind.
