Interesting. ISU is improving and they beat EWU and PSU last year.

ISU has a returning starting QB that will be a Junior. They lost their backups to graduation, so not surprised about getting a 2nd one, but it should be interesting who starts and how do you keep them happy?

ISU lost their entire starting DL to graduation. They have picked up 5 transfers, all on the D side. But only 2 of them are DL. ISU's weakness might be DL.

Ryan Phipps: 5-11 210 pound linebacker from the University of Oregon who will be a sophomore for the 2006 season. - Problem is ISU returns all the LBs.

Brent Bankus: Started for two seasons at San Bernardino Valley College, where the 6-2, 190 pound defensive back picked off seven passes over two seasons. (But they have returning starters here, possible not great ones).

Micah Cloward: 6-1, 265 pound defensive lineman from West Jordan, Utah. Cloward lettered for two seasons at Snow College. This is probably a good pickup because they lost their DL.

Joel Janke: 6-5, 240 pound defensive lineman from Brea, California. Janke lettered for two seasons at Fullerton Community College where he was named All-State last season after a twice being named First Team All-Conference (another DL)

Clyde Logan: 6-4, 200 pound defensive back from Matthews, North Carolina. Logan played for two seasons at Mt. San Jacinto College. He is an ex-United States Marine. But I don't see the need at CB?

As a side note, it looks like Div I-AA teams are going more and more towards picking up QB transfers from Div-IA programs. MSU, UM, ISU. Players that are very good, but will not start their Junior or Senior years and want to play. HS QBs entering top Div-IAA programs need to make it quick or be scout team forever.

This is a HUGE pick-up for ISU.

Gutierrez played QB at De La Salle, perhaps the best HS program in the nation, and he was an Elite 11 QB out of HS.

By far this is the biggest drop down so far this offseason.

Is it just that I'm noticing it more, or does there seem to be more and more 1-a dropdowns? It seems that not just at the QB position, and not just in the Big Sky Conf - I just read where and U of Arkansas QB just transferred to Georgia Southern.

Thoughts?

With all the crap going on at ISU with their basketball and football teams feuding with each other, not to mention some petty gun fire and drive-bys, I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone in their right mind would voluntarily choose to attend Idaho State. This is even before accounting for the fact that Pocatello is a sh*thole worse than Butte.

I think Gutierrez is a GREAT get for ISU.

Gutierrez did play at De La Salle and it is a very good program. I remember when he chose UM (the real thing) he was listed as a top QB out of HS. Given that he had a shoulder problem and just never lived up to the hype. Remember De La Salle made a QB look good with Marice Drew (UCLA) and Alijah Bradley running behind him. But he was still very good!! Interestingly, Gutierrez was not even 1st team All Bay Area that year. He was 2nd team behind Trent Edwards (QB at Stanford).

He should be GREAT for ISU. Especially with most (if not all) of the O returning. The BIG Question Mark of ISU is still D. And they lost a lot in the DL.

When you get a transfer, you never know (i.e. Washington, who would have thought he would have turned out the way he did, not me), they do have to learn the system and fit in, but these are good players.

As a note, ISU has a good program so smack on that is just smack and should be kept to that board in my opinion. It's a waste to have only smack responses.

I am not quite sure how MG ends up at ISU over any other school. ISU has such a bad reputation of "thuggery" and with all of the talk about drive-by shootings and such, why would anyone choose to go there? Why not Cal Poly or who knows what other school? This should move ISU into the top 2 contenders for the BSC title next fall. I know who I think should be number one, but there is a lot of time left before now and November 2006. There are some great I-A dropdowns in our league this year. We will have to see which staff can get their kids into their systems the fastest.

ISU was not exactly Gutierrez first choice. It was his only choice and based on his dad's research to find a place his son could go with 100% chance of starting. Definitely makes ISU one of the favorites in 2006. I feel the kid should have been more patient and could have gone to a program with a little more respect. Hoyt Arena is about as ugly a place to play that there can be and the respect of the program nationally is about the same. In all respects ISU is the armpit of the BSC, but they some how still recruit good players.
