MT License Plates

Post by GOKATS » Tue Jan 17, 2006 12:34 pm

I received a card from the state motor vehicle department reminding me that one of my vehicle registrations is due for renewal. I have 3 vehicles, all with MSU plates.

Half of the back of the card, printed in maroon, is a promo and check box to order UM plates, either the Main Hall plate or the Grizzly plate.

Perhaps these cards go out in some rotation and I was just unfortunate enough to receive one promoting UM plates, but if every card that goes out around the state is promoting nothing but UM plates, I'm one pi$$ed off camper.

Anyone have any knowledge on this?

I think the more important question is, which one are you going to order -- the Main Hall plate, or the Grizzly plate? ;)

I don't recall our last one having any of the specialty ones on them.

We both have the MSU ones, one of the things I was most excited about moving back to MT!

What do you think about the new MT standard ones? I think they are all right, but they remind me of one of the 80 others we allready have. Not sure which, but they just don't seem "new" to me.

The new ones are a lot more colorful than the old standard ones, but there are really a lot of plates in this state, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But as for getting the card for Griz plates, that will never happen on my car. Most of my family, including me, has Bobcat plates on their cars!

I tried calling the vehicle registration desk. But, no one answered. Is there a phone number where you could call and ask the question? I am very interested in finding out what the deal is here.
I can't imagine that it's more then a chance happening. I'm hoping that all customized plates get sent out randomly on the backside as options to the vehicle owner. At least I'm hoping that's the case.

OK, here is the gig. I talked to the head of this division in Deer Lodge. She informed me that with so many specialty plates now available, the year the "Lewis and Clark " plates came out ( I don't remember what year she said, but it was 3-4 years ago) the department came out with the policy that any of the specialty plate backers could buy the right to have the promo for their plates on the back of all renewal cards sent out statewide for the year.

The cost to obtain this promo is the cost of sending out the renewal cards, which this year was approx. $3,600, damn cheap when it comes to fund raising. I don't remember exactly, but I think that of the additional $30 for MSU plates the university receives $22, so an organization would have to get 160+ folks in Montana to support their cause to break even.

The right to sponsor comes on a first come basis and is booked by different entities through 2009, so the next available slot is 2010. The lady I spoke with didn't have the list of who has committed the next few years, ( MSU may already be on the list) , but it may be food for thought for the MSU administration.

Funny, I got my renewal card this past week, too, and my very first thought after looking at the back of the card was "WTF?" And then, maybe it's just random? Which, you discovered it's not. Oh well, I think all of the plates are pretty ugly since they stopped stamping them and started with the stick on letters.

I wonder how effective it would be to have a little flyer advertising the Griz plates. I for one would not put anything on my plates that I wasn’t a supporter of. I don’t think it will hurt their sales, but I don’t see it making much of an increase. I just couldn’t imagine a person seeing a flyer advertising Griz plates going and purchasing them on a whim.

Ok, lets remember how many "jump of the bandwagoners" (dont know if that is a word or not but...) there are in this state. The guy that lives across the street from me is a griz fan only because they were winning when he came to our state. I reminded him that he lived in Bozeman and that he should support the local team. I can't stand this guy anyway so it doesn't supprise me in the least.

I was in Butte this last fall with my son who was playing football. We stopped at the McD's and saw those stupid Griz cups. One of my players at MSU called me and I told him about the cups. He had already seen them at our stores in Bozeman. They were not there long but I am boycotting them anyway. If they are going to be dumb enough to bring Griz cups to the Bozeman stores they don't need my business. I like Wendy's better anyway.

We don't have that option here in Minnesota. Mine just say "BOBCATS".

Sorry I was busy what with trying to be an educator and all so I didn't have time to come into this site I'm kind of addicted to  Anyway, I just got my notice of renewal and my lady from the South couldn't understand why I was ranting and raving and absolutely pissed  All I had to do was say "Go Gators, Plainsmen, Tigers or Cocks" and she almost understood. Then when I told my younguns they're going to grad school at Georgia Tech, it finally sunk in. Anyway, this is about par for the course, and it's to be understood why our state can't understand why we have a 600 million dollar budget surplus instead of a 100 million deficit  Perhaps a few more displaced MSU grads will return and start explaining to those who remained? Meanwhile, isn't it great to start seeing all the Fizzlie grads moving out of state? I know I did my part this year to help them go someplace else.

Unfortunately both of my sons (MSU) are working out of state, and very successful in their careers (both engineers- one CE and one Chem E), but I don't know why any dUMb grad would have to leave. The job market in Bozeman is so short they could make $10/hr. at McDonalds.
