ARG.. American Idol
I can not believe how many "Manly men" are talking more about American Idol than the Super Bowl, Conrad Burns or anything else!
Two years ago I was over visiting my Mom and got to watch my first and only American Idol episode. I just don't get it.

Yeah, it is funny, most of the winners don't even go on to become big pop stars. They are usually great singers, but that is it. I just don't get the hype with the show. If they had to showcase their talent with songs they had written, etc. it would at least give me a reason to watch.
Instead I save my tv time for The Office.

He's no idol of mine ... but anybody willing to make a fool of themselves that earnestly will always get a little bit of attention. He was an interesting phenom ... part pity, part cruelty.mslacat wrote:Explain William HungBay Area Cat wrote:If they can't play a guitar and create their own music, they will never be an idol of mine. I can't believe we are discussing this, but it is all the rage again in America.
This morning on the radio they were discussing the show and saying that at least one if not others on the show last night that they were poking fun at were likely mentally disabled. Is this true? I think American Idol is going way too far to laugh at those that don't make the cut when they are teasing the handicap. I didn't see it, so I don't know how true this is, but I would love to hear the opinion of someone that watches the show.

i'm a dish guy without the networks so i dont watch this show. except that i have a reality tv channel on directv that plays all last years stuff and i find it pretty entertaining. some of these kids can really sing. but america like instant success stories, and that's what these guys are. all of the winners so far have went on to sell a million records. and some people like clay aiken, who didn't even win come out selling records. even if they are one and done as far as records go, i'd take their millions any day of the week. plus, you gotta think that the publicity at least get's there foot in the door from where they want to go. many are good musicians, who play their own instrument, and write their own songs. but there isn't a show for that yet, so i think if you have the voice, why not try to get an "in"?rtb wrote:Yeah, it is funny, most of the winners don't even go on to become big pop stars. I think American Idol is great. I mean, it's definitely entertaining. I just smile at the thought of some of those contestants who lack any sort of potential talent! I get so embarrassed for them (I actually cover my face with my hands some times!!)
I think every contestant should have to sing the National Anthem. Afterall, it is "AMERICAN" Idol, and SOOOOO many people don't know the words to the National Anthem. That is SOOOO embarrassing when people don't know the words. I can understand if it is a little kid, but seriously, after age __ , they should be able to remember. Heck, some people bring index cards incase they get nervous and forget.
If they're good enough to be in the top 12 on A.I., I'm sure at one point or another they'll be asked to sing the anthem before an event... they might as well sing it in the audition. Shoot, if they don't know the words for the audition... I say 'Give 'em the boot!'
It would be interesting if they did like an NHL, NFL, NBA, or MLB Idol tryout thing. The winner gets a spot on the team. NOW THAT WOULD BE FRICKING AWESOME!

I've just never heard a guy talk about American Idol in quite that way ... but I have heard lots of women describe it similarly. It was just a hunch ... apologies (and no offense?) if my gender-dar is off today!MSUCATS wrote:What would make you think that? ... Sometimes my thoughts just get the best of me.
