University of Idaho head football coach Nick Holt said Sunday he is leaving the Vandals to join the staff of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.
Holt, who just finished his second year with the Vandals, will join ex-Vandal Scott Linehan’s staff as a defensive line coach.
“I feel good about it,” said Holt, who plans to meet with Idaho players today. “It’s bittersweet, to leave this place, especially when I know it’s headed in the right direction. I know we can be good now.”
The Vandals were 5-18 under Holt, including 2-9 this season.
“We’re disappointed we’re losing Nick,” Idaho athletic director Rob Spear said. “But we’re Vandals, so we’re excited about a Vandal getting an opportunity at the next level.”
Spear, who said he had been working on a new contract for Holt, said he hopes to hire Holt’s replacement within “five to 10 days.” Spear refused to say whether he is considering anyone on the current staff.
Holt, 42, has no NFL playing or coaching experience. He is close friends with Linehan, a former Idaho player and assistant coach who was named the Rams’ coach in January.
Holt said he rejected Linehan’s first job offer “about two weeks ago,” but changed his mind over the weekend.
“It’s an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down,” Holt said.
