Montana on my mind

The real estate is priced higher than the wages would suggest as many people in other parts of Oregon buy property on the coast for weekend getaways, etc.

I didn't forget the clouds, I grew up in Kalispell so I know what that is like. However, it doesn't rain constantly like it does on the coast which I think ads even more to the gloom in the winter. Being out of the gloomy winters in Bozeman and now here I have realized how nice it is to see the sun in January. If Bozeman had more lakes around it would be perfect!

RTB in the fall of '03 I took a trip to Portland & a buddy & myself drove down I-5 to about Corvallis then cut over through Brownsville & took what I think was Hwy 26 over to Bend. What a gorgeous drive, probably the nicest I have ever taken. I was blown away by the Sisters. I would love to get back to that area to do some more exploring.

It definitely isn't Montana, but it is beautiful. I am actually looking at the 3 Sisters from work right now. The drive through the Cascades from here to Corvallis or Eugene is awesome, something everyone should see! If you ever do make it this way, look me up. Its always good to meet others from Montana even if they are Grizzlies!

All this talk of Montana makes me want to head back for a visit home!

good luck trying to move away from the crazy growth rate of the area. I saw a place in manhatten that i know for a fact was bought for 165K that was on 6 acres now selling for 550K. At least you have a farm to run away to - oh so jealious right now

- I hope we find place with space, I'd much rather have cows than people. How's the ratio in Pony? if it's good may be we will hide out there sometime

I'd say close to 300:1. Some Yellowstone Club dude is trying to ruin that though.

I grew up in Butte, and I love Montana. My entire family is there, and no matter where else life takes me, it will always be the only place I ever call "home."

I have to be honest, though -- I also love New York City. I initially moved here only for school, and I never planned on staying. I only came here because I got into a good school, and it was the "right" thing to do from a career standpoint...I planned on coming here, making the most of it, getting my degree, and then moving back out west afterward.

That was five years ago, and well...quite a bit has happened since then. For some reason, while I was a student here, New York started to feel like home, too...not in the same way that Montana does, but it started to feel like it was where I belonged. I don't know why; I've lived in other places (i.e., Seattle and DC), and I was never quite as taken with them as I am with NY. As strange as this sounds, I actually think 9/11 had a lot to do with it. I finished school, got a clerkship in DC...and after that was over, and it was time to find a "permanent" job, somehow I felt like NY was where I was supposed to be.

So, here I am. I've been back for almost 2 years now. I'm not sure how long I'll stay -- someday, I'd like to say I'll live in Montana again, but right now, I can't imagine leaving NYC.

that's even better than belt I think, and well Belt is the "black hole" once you go in you never leave

Born in Livingston, grew up on a ranch in Paradise Valley. On track to graduate from MSU Spring '07. Still amazed every time I go back home that I was able to work in that damnable, chill-you-to-the-bone NORTH WIND (brrrrr). Bozeman's non-windy climate has definately spoiled me!

Born and raised in Missoula. (I know you cat fans will say I never had a chance). Of course now I sell Real Estate, and probably 30% - 40% of my clients are people moving "back home." Most are taking cuts in pay to get back to Montana. Doesn't surprize me, but that comes from someone who currently doesn't want to ever move outside of the state.

I used to elk hunt in Pony. You definitely would want to be able to live with the "locals" and there ain't a lot of 'em. Lots of mining history there. The one thing to soothe your weary nerves is the hotpotting in the area.

Have to admit mooning and being mooned there often.

Not born in Montana, but have lived here half my mid life, life. AF brat, lived in Sacramento, Tacoma, Germany, Texas, Oregon, THEN Great Falls, Havre, Canada, MSU and spent several years around central Montana. Lived in Seattle for a couple and now back in Great Falls for the past 15 years.
I'm just a "tumblin tumbleweed" and Montana is my place of choice.
Will probably try and get a place in the Bridger Canyon for my later years so that I can become a "senior weezer" and where Blue and Gold.

guess just sick of being stuck where it is overpopulated. grew up in SF Bay Area, stuck in Baltimore & DC, now in Seattle area for 5 years, it's time to head back to wide open spaces

Pony's a great place. I've been going to the bar there since I was a kid. (with my grandpa, not by myself. I'm not even legal drinking age yet!) It's a good atmosphere. I'd recommend Pony to anybody.

Personally, I'm a Bozeman native, born and raised. I'm still here going to school. My ancestors originally settled in the Gallatin Valley in 1862 and seven generations later, I'm still here. I'm not sure what my plans will be after school, but I hope not to venture far away.

Sorry, Ponycat. I'll give some "outsiders" some more information.

Pony does not have a gas station or a grocery store.
It's at least 60 miles to the nearest Walmart, Costco, or Starbucks.
Your fancy car will get dirty.
It's 10 miles to the nearest school.

That should help.
