Bobcat Survives Arrow Shot Through Head
Here is a story that I'm sure someone could use in relation to our Bobcats.
Bobcat Survives Arrow Shot Through Head
Friday, March 3, 2006
CAMARILLO, Calif. - A young female bobcat was recovering from being shot through the head with an arrow that lodged between the animal's eyes and out through the skull, wildlife officials said.
The projectile managed to miss the brain and other vital organs and caused some sinus and bone damage, leaving veterinarians and those who caught the cat Feb. 19 optimistic about its chances of returning to the wild.
"If you're going to get an arrow through the head, that is probably the best place to have it," said Nicky Thole, director of Camarillo Wildlife Rehabilitation.
The 8- to 10-month-old bobcat was believed to have wandered for more than a week with the wound before it was captured. The emaciated animal, which weighed just 8 pounds - half the weight for a cat her age - underwent surgery and was showing signs of normal neurological function, said veterinarian Peregrine Wolff.
The arrow was likely shot by a hunter, said state Department of Fish and Game warden Grant Oggel.
"Either somebody had a very bad shot or a very good shot," he said. "It was a one-in-a million shot."

Your opinions on hunting are obvious. You took your shot at me last fall when I mentioned elk hunting camp. I know you're a Bobcat, but if some of us don't fall into your PETA agenda, back off.gtapp wrote:Now if the hunter had taken an arrow between the eyes, that would be funny!

On a serious note, why are Bobcats hunted at all? Do their numbers get out of control without population thinning through hunting?
Since I lived in a rural area in Central Montana for over half of my life in what I assume is prime bobcat habitat, and I've never seen one, I get the impression that their numbers are fairly low.
Hunting is great when it is for food and when it increases the health of the population (by reducing the population to sustainable numbers).
But I have to side with gtapp on this one (the sarcastic gist of his message ... and not his literal message) to the extent that I don't understand the motivation for killing them in the first place, and kind of feel bad for the animal ... and hope that nobody else does get a shot at it.
So today, this appears to be my most sincere way to channel my support for b(B)obcats everywhere.

In Montana Bobcats are not hunted in the 'traditional' sense of the word, i.e. man stalking prey in the pursuit of filling the freezer. However, I believe a limited number are taken by trappers (I'm not a trapper), but the harvest is carefully monitored by Fish, Wildlife & Parks.Bay Area Cat wrote:On a serious note, why are Bobcats hunted at all? With that out of the way, there are some, who if the topic was going out on a nice spring day and 'plinking gophers', would reply that it would be cool if the 22 bullet ricocheted (sp) off a rock and hit the plinker between the eyes.

Yep had a nice nap. Basketball is really not a sport, but understand from those who were awake that the Griz had some success against your squads this year.Another teddy bear coming out of hibernation due to bb success. How did it go on the football field? 16-6
As for football my calculator says the Griz have an 85% rating against the Cats over the last 20 years and the Cats are at 15% which, by most academic standards, is a failing grade. You might compare football coaching successes between the two teams but, with your basketball success this year, such a comparison might push you close to suicide.
Cheers,
Tom
