I realize this is the smack forum, but some use of logic should apply. You guys are telling me that cat fans are going to stay around if the cats start loosing more. LOL. That is interesting, considering the fact that I hear a lot of how now that the cats are doing well there seems to be more fans at the games. hmmm.
And are you telling me that cat fans are so loyal and dedicated that they support their team thru thick and thin. Need I bring up NAU 2003. My understanding from reading posts last year is that half of the fans left the game early, with the game in reach, and missed that spectacular comeback. Great fans! What about Cal Poly this year. At what point did the mass exedous begin during that game.
I can guarantee you that washington-grizzly stadium will never have less that 15,000 people at a game.
So lets talk basket ball. My guess is fans stopped going to the mens games and started going to the womens games. Why...because the women were winning. That is a bit fickle. But having mens coach who didn't connect with the community sure didn't help matters and I suspect that contributed significantly.

Jah, you're missing the point, which we expect from Grizzlies...
Of course I'm not saying Bobcat Stadium will be full if we start to slide again. It, too, will become the morgue it was in the 90's.
But you arrogant Griz (evidenced by your edict that there will ALWAYS be 15,000 fans at the Denny Dome) ASSUME that you will always win. Someday, your current run will end and trust me, following a couple losing seasons, you won't find 10,000 people at a game. It's human nature; people aren't going to go watch losers; IT'S NOT FUN.
The COACH not "connecting" with the community????? LMAO That kind of comment could ONLY come from someone from Missoula! You think the folks of Lubbock, Texas have CONNECTED with Bob Knight? The crowds were still good for Griz BB under Taylor and the only thing he connected were his lips & a beer bottle! (Actually, I'm not sure on that, he may have been a whiskey man...)
Point is, Jah, enjoy it while it lasts. Someday Saturday afternoons at the School of Modern Dance will once again merely consist of hooking up with your dealer before Saturday night...

I don't think I did miss the point. Your point was that Griz fans are fickle. I pointed out that they are no more fickle than cat fans. Both schools draw from basically the same fan base so the fans really can't be all that different.
And I don't think it is arrogant at all to say that the Griz won't consistantly draw less than 15k. I can't really say they never will, because who knows what will be going on in 50 years, but a reasonable assumption is that only a complete catastrophy would lead to this happening. The Griz have way too much going for them for them to slide as far as you are predicting they will.

The odds that the Griz have a couple losing seasons in a row is very minimal, but if that did ever happen, I would bet there would be a steep decline in fan attendance. While this number would still probably be more than the max capacity here in Bozeman, the stadium would certainly look fairly empty. I doubt I will ever see this in my lifetime, as the Griz have an phenomal program over in Missoula, but stranger things have happened. Every team slips from the top eventually, but to what extent is the question. If they slip to a .500 team in mediocracy, the stands will still be pretty full, if not completely. But if they slip to the bottom feeder of the Big Sky, fans will dissapear.
I think what El_Gato and the rest are saying is it is harder to be a Cat fan. Why do you think the Niners, Cowboys, etc, all had so many fans? It is easy to like a winner. It takes more dedication to constantly "put up" with a team like the Cats. I'm a long time St. Louis Rams, Baltimore Orioles, Phoenix Suns and St. Louis Blues fan. With the exception of the Blues (who have made the playoffs 26 years in a row BUT CAN'T WIN THE CUP - deep breaths), were/are all losers. I like a team because I like them. Win or lose. To start liking your favorite team right off the bat when they are losers is harder. And continue liking them is even harder.
It's easy to like the Griz cuz they win year after year, and keep gaining new fans from it. I used to attend Griz games in the early 90s and late 80s, and there weren't near as many fans.
Just like the Cowboys "were" America's team, UM is "Montana's" team. But just like the Cowboys, when they fell from the top, they lost a lot of fans. The same will happen if the Griz ever fall that far.

If they move up to Div 1-A and suck they will/could average less than 15,000 fans. I really think that would be a MISTAKE in moving up. I like the national championship/playoffs. Playing for a bowl game just isn't the same to me.JahGriz wrote:I don't think I did miss the point. Your point was that Griz fans are fickle. I pointed out that they are no more fickle than cat fans. This is true for a lot of other states as well. Look at Oklahoma or Oregon as examples. I would guess everyone in the state of Oklahoma that follows football even a little bit is a Sooner "fan" other than long time Cowboy backers because it is easier. They are always competitive if not on top, get national exposure, bigger stadium and facilities, etc. Same thing in Oregon, the Beavers have a strong following of true deep rooted fans but the casual fans are 99% Ducks. Not to sound like neverdidanythingwithmylife but maybe it is a STATE thing - OK/OK ST, OR/OR ST, MT/MT ST????????I think what El_Gato and the rest are saying is it is harder to be a Cat fan

JahGriz once again proves that all UM folks should be thankful for Griz football; without it, I think the Board of Regents would have a tough time justifying an EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION in Missoula. Let's look at what the UM Logic and English departments churn out:
and then just a short time later...JahGriz wrote:I can guarantee you that washington-grizzly stadium will never have less that 15,000 people at a game.
I've not checked recently, but I HAVE to believe that tuition is cheaper at UM than at THE Montana State University. If not, UM STUDENTS SHOULD IMMEDIATELY PROTEST AND/OR GO ON A HUNGER STRIKE (WITH NO MUNCHIES) BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING RIPPED OFF!!!!JahGriz wrote:...to say that the Griz won't consistantly draw less than 15k. Wow el gato, great find. I think any reasonable person knows what I ment. The only reason I added a caveat is that in retrospect I realized that anything can happen given time. And once this planet is no more then there certainly won't be 15,000 people at a Griz game.
So since you seem to know SO MUCH about the furture demise of the Griz program, why don't you tell us when exactly this is going to happen.
You are so blinded by dislike of the Griz that your logic has left, if you ever had it.
Also, your attempt at analyzing my educational background has failed.
I would also like to note that I may have a bias toward UM, but I am perfectly willing to see the the good and bad in both schools. In fact if you talk to the people who run this board you might find that I offered my help in getting a bobcat message board going when the kitties had no home on the net.
You see el gato the equation you have perfected is not actually valid. What equation you might ask? Well let me show you the equation that can sum up the logic behind your posts:
Griz = Bad
A simple equation for a simple minded person.

I think a few losses to the CATS from STATE is a good start to this demise we are witnessing. Afew more tears in the post-game interviews from baby hack and the slippery slope gets steeper!!So since you seem to know SO MUCH about the furture demise of the Griz program, why don't you tell us when exactly this is going to happen.

I agree. Hugh demise in GRIZ football. What, we are barely averaging 23,000 fans per home game. And when have you heard recently; playing the GRIZ in Montana is the number 1 football venue in I-AA. Hopefully we can drag our football up to the level of the cats.94Vegascat wrote:I think a few losses to the cats from state is a good start to this demise we are witnessing. The griz lead the BSC in attendence; but try to argue that one with the boys at DELAWARE, GEORGIA SOUTHERN, and APPALACHIAN STATE.playing the GRIZ in Montana is the number 1 football venue in I-AA.
All three of those schools average home attendence very comparable if not exceeding those numbers that the griz claim.

This weeks smack will be how MSU hasn't won in Flagstaff since the Fillmore Administration...also, to argue that UM isn't the #1 venue in 1-AA isn't really a good position to take. While there might be other comparable venues (McNeese, perhaps Delaware, GSU) there certainly isn't anywhere better to see a 1-AA game than Wa-Griz. Fortunately MSU is heading in that direction (although admittedly still a long ways away) with the significant increase in attendance and overall excitement in the community about the program. The attendance numbers have risen near a point this year that would justify a expansion of the south end zone bleachers, hopefully things continue to improve and that happens in the not-too-distant future.

It's not just the number of fans in the seats. It's the total package!94VegasCat wrote:The griz lead the BSC in attendence; but try to argue that one with the boys at DELAWARE, GEORGIA SOUTHERN, and APPALACHIAN STATE.playing the GRIZ in Montana is the number 1 football venue in I-AA.

From a Delaware Fan "I've been to GSU... Montana and obviously UD and I have to say that... that when all things are considered... setting... stadium... attendance... fan enthusiasm... Montana gets the nod. "
From I-AA Sports writer "There is no question that in my "Mecca" travels this year that the University of Montana has the largest tailgating, the most packed stadium, the loudest and most responsive crowd, the greatest community support, and an awesome setting. It is simply amazing."
You need to take of those blue and gold tinted glasses. I realize that a win against the GRIZ equates to a successful season for the kitties. While we love to beat the cats (8-2 for the last 10, 17-3 for the last 20), there’s much more to Griz Football than a win over the cats.

While I'll agree that UM is probably the best 1AA setting for a football game in the country, I still laugh at the fact that Griz fans just keep bringing up the past when it comes to Cat/Griz. Maybe Hauck hates the Cats so much cuz he hasn't beat them yet? I hope your little streak comforts you again after we walk out of Missoula with another win in Washington-Bobcat Stadium.Eastcoastgriz wrote:

And yes, the last couple years, beating you did equate to a successful season because that game gave us a share of the BSC title and a playoff berth. So yes, beating you was a big deal the last couple years. Maybe Griz fans do like the Cats, they seem to want us in the playoffs, they can't seem to keep us out when they have the chance.
