I see journey emerson from Lame Deer broke Gros Ventre’s single game record by dropping 82 tonight.
Are you serious? Wow....that didn't last long. That's more points in a 32 minute game than Kobe scored in a 48 minute game.
They beat Forsyth 111-27. Not what you could call excellent competition. Quite frankly, I think it disgusting that a coach would pile the points on in such a game. Keeping your starter in to score 82 points is ridiculous.

Exactly and the reason given for doing it isn’t acceptable either. Something about his teammates wanted him to get the record. This isn’t impressive at all. It’s too bad their are enormous mismatches in sporting events, but this isn’t how to deal with them. Not only that but what if Emerson got hurt?

Should be an interesting game in Billings Wednesday night when Lame Deer and Lodge Grass play a girl’s/boy’s double header.

It was just as much about taking the record from Lodge Grass as it was for Emerson to hold the record. It's a big rez rivalry.

Maybe Ventre can put up 84 on them...

The new norm: we don’t care about who we’re playing or the risk of blowing a shot at a championship if we can break an individual scoring record.

What is the maximum number of points that should be allowed before a coach should be reprimanded for letting his player go out and compete for a state record? Was the previous record of 71 ok and only 82 crossed the line?

That’s a legit question. I don’t know the answer, but I’m of the opinion that going all out with your starters on the floor and continuing to run up the score while the mercy rule is in affect is over the line. Disagree?

So do we also let QB throw to 6'5" speedster for 4 quarters on every down, even though you're up 40 and know others guys can't cover him. I mean it's for a state record and all.

Personally I tend to agree with that, I just don't think it's possible to clearly define where "the line" falls. Was it 50, 60, 70 points? And if one team lets their player score 71 and the rival team wants to see if they can break the record, another part of me says let the kids have fun and see who can come out with the record at the end of the year.

I cannot believe that you need this explained to you but here we are. In the Gros Ventre game the score was 108-70. A blow out yes but nothing we don't see every week in small school BBall. Huntley Project showed they have the ability to score and compete in the game. In the Lame Deer game however it was 111-27. Forsyth is last in that division and is winless on the year. In fact I think I read that they didn't win last year either which means they have not won A GAME since Covid started. They were never in the game. They were never going to compete. Lame Deer who is in that division knew this before the game started. If you take away Gros Ventre's 71 in that game, Lodge Grass loses by 40+. If you take away Emerson's 82 Lame Deer still wins. Just gross. I imagine most neutral fans will be rooting against LD once the tourneys start.
Edit to add this: My post is to say it isn't about the points scored. It's 'Is the game competitive'?

OK, my point remains the same. Who gets to decide where the line is between a competitive game and a non-competitive game, one in which it's appropriate to leave your star player in to score 70 or 80 points and one in which it isn't? I'm fine with people having the opinion that it was out of line (an opinion I tend to agree with) but not ok with people calling for coaches to be reprimanded over what is purely a subjective definition of when a line is crossed between just trying to win and running up the score.

It's decided in football all the time. MHSA has a running clock when the score difference gets greater than 35. So your point isn't valid.

My bad, I must have missed the part of the Mercy Rule that reprimands coaches if their team keeps scoring or playing starters after it goes into effect.

Well the reason you have a mercy rule is to show mercy. Typically teams pull their starters. You asked where the line is. I think that is it. Watch either game. Neither were being their points in the second half in a competitive environment. There have been a lot of great athletes who could have set unbelievable records had games not been out of hand. Their coaches showed sportsmanship and sat them.
I also fault the opposing coach. Not going to win the game, why not slow game down, force the player to have to come down and play defense , double and triple team the player.

At who’s expense. How would you like to be a Forsyth dad or player this week.
