There's plenty of room to criticize last night's refs but this is a call that they surprisingly got exactly right. If we could see the entire video of the play instead of just a photo Moody kicks his leg out after releasing the shot and initiates contact with Ford, which is an offensive foul.wbtfg wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 3:01 pmHey @Colter_Nuanez, I think we all agree the officials were over the top, but what's up with this misleading tweet from skyline?Colter_Nuanez wrote: ↑Fri Feb 17, 2023 9:46 amColter Nuanez is joined by Andrew Houghton for key Big Sky Conference story lines (1:47) plus key story lines entering into this weekend’s Cat-Griz double header in Bozeman (9:23).

Right. Which makes it strange that's the play skyline is using as the poster play for poor officiating.MSU01 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 4:53 pmThere's plenty of room to criticize last night's refs but this is a call that they surprisingly got exactly right. Well, that photo gets more clicks and views from angry Griz fans than the one clearly showing him kicking the leg that's posted in a reply to the tweet. Alternatively, maybe Colter doesn't understand why it was correctly called a foul. I had no idea either watching the game live!wbtfg wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 5:09 pmRight. Two thoughts here- one, I tweeted the picture to symbolize just how many fouls were called all the way around. Based on how the officials established early on, fouls could and would be called on almost every play. That's how a rivalry game can go if the officials determined such.
Also, I had not seen the replay and I appreciate all of your engagement and the pictures of the slow motion. He definitely kicked his leg, definitely a foul....unless it's a no call. I couldn't see that while broadcasting the game, so I found it helpful and interesting to look through the conversation. If you let the players play and don't establish right out of the gates that you are calling it tight, the game almost always flows better and you don't to watch an endless free throw shooting contest.
Instead, the tone was set early that the physicality of the rivalry was going to be called tightly and almost every time down the court, which led to so many stoppages and a clunky game. Which was really unfortunate because that's two really good teams playing in front of a really good atmosphere. Nobody went to watch Jubrile Belo, RaeQuan Battle and Josh Bannan sit on the bench because of foul trouble.

As hard as that media group tries, they are seriously slanted toward the Griz. It is in their best interest to be pro Montana and Montana State or even better yet, simply neutral journalism. But I've listened and read enough of their stuff to conclude that it is a Griz homer outfit. And it makes sense, as they are based in Missoula.

Re: Rivalry week Big Sky Breakdown podcast
I re-watched and it confirmed what I saw at the game. The griz were hacking because they would have no chance if they didn't. Their only chance was a crew who "let them play" or felt obligated to even it out. The fouls on them in that first half were correct calls. They were hacking like their life depended on it. I'm sure Sprinkle knew DeCuire would get to whine in the press conference with no consequences. He always gets away with that. Kudos to Sprinkle for telling it like it was to the griz-centric media-we shot a lot of free throws because they fouled a lot. I'm sure their whining and crying will bear fruit in the Big Sky tourney. Spurting blood or bone protrusion will be needed for a foul to be called.

Seeing how both sides complain, I'd say it's pretty fair coverage.

Re: Rivalry week Big Sky Breakdown podcast
Well said, it was a very confusing play live - I thought the Bobcats got away with a lucky break until finding out later on that it was actually the right call. Agree to a certain extent about the refereeing but in the case of last night's first half I think they were calling fouls that were in fact fouls most of the time. The second half had a much better flow once the teams realized "wait a second, we need to have some players left by the end of the game".Colter_Nuanez wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 6:05 pmDang, I wish tweets would embed.MSU01 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 5:16 pmWell, that photo gets more clicks and views from angry Griz fans than the one clearly showing him kicking the leg that's posted in a reply to the tweet. Your comments about not wanting to see players sit on the bench are right on. Which is a good case for going to 6 fouls per game before disqualification. I'd go for that in high school, too.... especially the way refs call games with so many incidental non-determinant contact fouls.

During most of the game the announcers for the ladies game did a fairly decent job of calling the game evenly, and yet they often had an undertone of pulling for the Griz which I won't go into pointing out. But sometimes they really let it slip out that they clearly have a Griz slant/bias.
On a basket made for UM here’s what the PBP guy said as Gfeler made a basket, “Mismatch Gfeler against Jackson we’ll take that every time!”. By saying “we’ll take that every time” he makes it clear that he identifies as a Griz.
During the time out with 4 seconds left in the game Cats ahead 73 -70 and would be inbounding the ball the lady doing the color said this, “Yeah just a little bit of a shame that we didn’t see a little bit more action there in that 3rd quarter. I think it would be a completely different game, but that missed layup. final nail in the coffin for the UM Grizzlies.”
One would think that impartial announcers would be thrilled to be calling a game as close as 3 points and would’ve been a 1-point game but for a missed layup. But this lady makes it clear that she wanted more action in the 3rd qtr and wanted a completely different game. The Cats scored 15 in the 3rd and the Griz scored 7. Hmmm which team do you think she wanted more action from and what completely different game was she pulling for?

The whole whiny-little-bitch routine from gris on Moody's foul is a lot like the whiny-little-bitch routine on the 'foot out of bounds' excuse in the loss to Sac in football. Gawwd that fan base is insufferable lately.

I think you are talking about Krista Redpath who was a former griz player. I might be wrong and don’t want to look it up but if she played for Selvig no doubt she would currently be frustrated. If a former’s bias is sprinkled into a broadcast, even unintentionally, no big deal. The reality is that this is a very small market and the pbp and color typically do something else for a living. Not enough market to be a full time TV announcer. So you live with who’s available, and most really do pretty well considering that. I’m thankful we get to see all football, basketball, and most volleyball. “We” is a hard habit to break when you talk like that in the rest of your life off-camera. Oh well.

MSU is also very lucky right now that their two professional announcers (Ben Creighton for FB TV and Keaton Gillogly for radio) are both fantastic. I doubt either will be around long but it has been a pleasure listening to both. Announcing is kind of like refereeing, everyone jumps on the smallest errors or perceived bias and rarely do you get complimented for doing a good job!tdub wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 11:14 amThe reality is that this is a very small market and the pbp and color typically do something else for a living. No not Krista, I would've recognized her voice. The PBP guy called her Diana. As I said before they did a fairly decent job and their Griz bias for the most part was subtle enough to only earn an eye roll and a whatever. Still if it's ok for the announcers to be biased against the team they follow all year it really should be ok for fans to point out that they are biased. If you're going to be biased, then own it. If you don't like being called biased then suppress your bias, it's not that hard if you want to be impartial.Common Cat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 10:30 amI think you are talking about Krista Redpath who was a former griz player. Hmmm which team do you think she wanted more action from and what completely different game was she pulling for?

Re: Rivalry week Big Sky Breakdown podcast
I think there were two different sets of announcers depending on which broadcast you watched. Krista Redpath likely did color commentary for the TV broadcast, while the normal MSU announcers (Ian Laird and Diana Laufer) did the ESPN+ broadcast as usual. The ESPN+ announcers are by no means biased towards the Griz unless you are going out of your way to look for it. Ian is a Bobcat fan and longtime Bobcat Nation participant. Diana is inexperienced but improving, she was in way over her head early in the year when they had her calling games on her own.Joe Bobcat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 12:56 pmNo not Krista, I would've recognized her voice. I might be wrong and don’t want to look it up but if she played for Selvig no doubt she would currently be frustrated. If a former’s bias is sprinkled into a broadcast, even unintentionally, no big deal. You bleed the colors you played for.Joe Bobcat wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 11:08 pmYou're not wrong about this.lv2hoop wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 6:09 pmAs hard as that media group tries, they are seriously slanted toward the Griz. It is in their best interest to be pro Montana and Montana State or even better yet, simply neutral journalism. But I've listened and read enough of their stuff to conclude that it is a Griz homer outfit. And it makes sense, as they are based in Missoula.
