EWU dropping football to DII?

Post by Au Blue » Thu Dec 07, 2023 12:19 pm

*didn't see this on the Football Forum... sorry for duplicating*

I think this has been rumored for years, but sounds like EWU is considering dropping their football program to DII as well as cutting back funding for men's/women's basketball.

Streamline

The task force recommends certain programs and offices be streamlined.

The group recommends operating men's and women's basketball "below current funding level" and looking for additional fundraising opportunities.

Transform

The final group is programs and offices that should be transformed to improve effectiveness.

That includes examining the marching band's budget, as the group believes the current funding model and budget are not currently sustainable.

The task force also believes athletics "as a whole, needs to be transformed to eliminate its structural deficit."

Football is the only sport listed in this category.

The group says, "It is unsustainable for a university of our size with our budgetary challenges to allow a single unit to accumulate annual deficits as large as the ones listed in this template."

The task force believes there "are no sacred cows" and the university should consider all options, including moving football to a lower division.

With the outrageous costs of tuition and the massive amount of university employees always increasing, I won’t be surprised to see many smaller colleges/universities just drop football altogether and also rid themselves of paying for the extra women’s scholarships that generate zero income and run at deficits.

Seattle to Billings to Missoula to Bozeman to Portland to Billings

What a ride

I think this is a fair statement. Some schools have recently added or re-established a football program (I can’t recall where) depends on desire of the admission and alumni.
