Given the angst of losing Danny Sprinkle after only four seasons I guess I'm curious as to why UM's coach Travis DeCuire has not received offers similar to what Danny got at Utah State? Danny coached four years at MSU and had a 81-43 record which is a winning % of 65%. Danny was 3-3 against the griz. The games with UM were cancelled during one of his years. As we know he took his last two teams to the NCAAs. The first trip MSU was blown out 97-62 by Texas Tech. His last team played a very competitive game against a very good Kansas State team, losing 77-65.
However, DeCuire has quite a good record at UM. He has dominated MSU; I think I read where he is 20-5 against MSU.
From the record stats: DeCuire has led Montana to three Big Sky Conference regular-season championships (2015, 2018, 2019), two Big Sky tournament titles (2018, 2019) and two NCAA tournament berths (2018, 2019). He has a 177-112 record which is a winning % of 61.2%
I guess the rapid rise of Sprinkle's success was the main reason Utah State came after him. After two mediocre seasons he went 27-8 and 25-10 in his last two seasons.
Mainly I guess I'm just jealous that our rival is able to have stability in their coaching ranks. Hopefully Coach Logie will have success but at a level where he won't be swooped up like Sprinkle was. It's difficult for a program to have long term success without stability.

It's definitely a good question. I think he's had a very good career. He has started out very strong in his career, but since then hasn't necessarily lit the world on fire in terms of a post season run.aucat wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 12:59 pmGiven the angst of losing Danny Sprinkle after only four seasons I guess I'm curious as to why UM's coach Travis DeCuire has not received offers similar to what Danny got at Utah State? Also, I think his contract with UM is pretty sweet. I've heard he gets to pocket all income generated from traveling to bigger programs for money games.

Re: UM Coach Travis DeCuire and Danny Sprinkle
DeCuire was a finalist for the head coaching job at Cal in 2014 (he didn't get the job and went to UM instead) and again somewhere around 2017-18, but withdrew his name from consideration to stay at UM. I recall there being rumors at the time that he was offered the job but turned it down, but that may or may not have been true. Since that time his teams at UM have been decent but have usually underperformed their expectations - he isn't going to get fired from UM but at the same time maybe he is no longer as attractive a candidate as he once was to bigger programs.
The whole coaching carousel is quite random to some extent, if Utah State had decided to go in another direction with their coaching search or if the sequence of coaching moves that led to USU's opening (Notre Dame hired Penn State's coach, who hired VCU's coach, who hired USU's coach) didn't happen as it did, Danny would still be at MSU today. Fortunately MSU has its stability on the women's side, as Coach Binford appears to be turning into MSU's version of what UM had for decades with Robin Selvig. Her record against the Griz since Selvig retired is very, very good.

Good analysis. It’s interesting to note that Coach Bin won her last two games vs. Robin Selvig.MSU01 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 1:16 pmDeCuire was a finalist for the head coaching job at Cal in 2014 (he didn't get the job and went to UM instead) and again somewhere around 2017-18, but withdrew his name from consideration to stay at UM. I'm pretty sure I've read/heard @Colter_Nuanez talk about there have been job opportunities that TDC has had. He'd have to be the one to give some insight.
