Just heard that the women have fallen quite a ways behind and that men are clinging to the lead but are about to lose it.

Sorry I missed this, been working in the yard and keeping an eye on the competition. It's been a good one.

Men's competition will come down to the 4x400, which is exactly what you want to see. NAU leads by 5 over the Bobcats.

MSU - 176
WSU - 86

So...basically MSU will have to finish 3-4 places ahead of NAU to win the conference championship. That will be a tall order.

NAU is absolutely crushing everyone on the women's side. I think they finished 1st through 6th in the 5k. Bryn Morley from Bigfork now competes for NAU and finished 3rd. I think that's the last event of her career.

MSU is not going to finish worse than 2nd for men or women. Women are ahead of 3rd place Weber by 47.5 points, but a whopping 104 points behind NAU. NAU got 36 points (out of 37 possible) in the 5k.

The Bobcat men are 90 points ahead of Weber, who are guaranteed to finish 3rd on both sides.

In the 4x400, rankings coming in are Weber, NAU, then MSU barely slower. MSU will need to win it and have NAU finish 4th...tall order.

Yeah, I understated just how good the women's time was in that 4x400. That 3:37 would have been a conference record, which is unreal. Especially unreal is that they weren't even all that close to NAU!!

I was thinking that. The athletic department already had their end of year banquet since graduation was today, but this has to be the event of the year. Especially winning in this dramatic fashion, AND dethroning quite a dynasty...at least for this year.

The interesting thing about track is, that a team can beat another team in a relatively small meet like this. 815 points spread between 11 teams gives you some high scores. Then you get to a meet against 200 teams or whatever, and only the elite of the elite are going to score. MSU will score points in the steeplechase and maybe sneak a couple more here and there, but NAU could pile up some points at the national level. I've won divisional meets because my teams had depth but maybe didn't win many events. Then a team that gets 3rd at divisionals with 8 golds and not much else, can go to state and still get those 6 or 7 golds and win the meet because scores are much lower the more teams you get there. So I don't say that to diminish what MSU did this weekend...I say it to say MSU could potentially say they beat one of the best teams in the country.

There's been some Class C meets where one kid wins the championship for his/her school. I think Todd Reich from Hot Springs did that. The NCAA national meet is more about individual performance. This is like Gonzaga getting knocked off in the WCC Tournament. Almost never happens! Whatever-I want to see that 4X400 race on the big screen at Gold Rush!
