NCAA Track First Rounds - Fayetteville, AR

Post by kennethnoisewater » Thu May 23, 2024 11:37 am

I've been posting about this on another thread but thought I'd start a new one to keep up with these results.

First of all, this is considered the NCAA first round and quarterfinals for most events. In field events, the prelims are the first round, then the finals that happen immediately after are the quarterfinals. If you make the top 12 in the finals, you move on to the semifinals in Eugene. The semifinals are just the prelims at that meet, then the finals are the final round. In shorter running events (sprints and middle distance), the first round will be today (yesterday for men), and again that's just the prelims. Men's finals are tomorrow, women's "finals" are Saturday. If you place top 12 in those "finals", you'll move on to Eugene, where the prelims of that meet are the semifinals, and the finals are the finals. The 5k and 10k are the only events this week where there aren't two rounds...just too grueling to run twice in two days. Those two races are considered semifinals, and the top 12 go on to Eugene.

So far in the men's competition, Matthew Richtman and Ben Perrin placed 14th and 18th, respectively. Nice performances, but not moving on. Janis Pohl is sitting 10th in the 400H after the first round, so he'll run tomorrow in the quarterfinals for a chance to go to Eugene.

You can watch on ESPN+, or you can follow results here: https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Outdoor/2 ... /index.htm

Clara Fox had a tough day in the javelin. She threw 143'7" and is in 12th after the first flight. Unfortunately the best throwers are in the next two flights, so there's virtually zero chance she'll make the finals. Good experience for her though, being a freshman at the first rounds.

Elena Carter had a GREAT day in the long jump. We'll see if it's good enough. Her PR coming in was 20' 5", and today she jumped 20' 10.75" for second in her flight and 6th after two flights. There are two more flights though, with the best jumpers still to come.

I believe this is a school record.

LJ record was 20-9 (Lacy Hinzpeter) set back in 2003.

Alright, catching up on a few things. I haven't been watching much this afternoon.

Elena ended up 23rd in the long jump. Just goes to show how elite some of these athletes are--school record and she finishes 23rd in the region. She also had the 100H but didn't finish the race. Don't know what happened but I hope she's OK.

Maisee Brown jumped 12' 5.5" in the Pole Vault but finished tied for 41st. Her best is 13' 9", so that has to be a disappointment.

Sydney Brewster threw decent in the shotput, but finished in 39th. Sydney is a freshman, so the future is bright for her too. Of note in the shotput, a Junior from Oregon set a collegiate record (beating her own record from earlier this year by almost a foot) with a 65' 7.75". Brock Lesnar's daughter Mya, who looks exactly like him, finished second with a really good 61' 3.5" throw.

I think that's it for MSU women today. We'll have a couple ladies in the steeplechase and one in the 5k...pretty sure that's all that's left for the women. Final day for the men is tomorrow.

I'm being told that it's wind-aided, so no record. Still an amazing accomplishment.

I’m not a TF expert by any stretch of the imagination but this just seems incredible. Eight participants at nationals in the last three years.

It truly is wild. Not to beat up on UM, but they got their first participant to the championships in 5 years when Evan Todd qualified in the javelin. For MSU to get eight in one event in three years really is incredible.

This program has been improving steadily for a few years, but we've still been losing Montana recruits to big programs like NAU, Nebraska, Stanford, etc. The elite kids have understandably been looking for the best programs in the country, but this is shifting. MSU is more and more able to attract Montana's best athletes every year, and having the IPF will only help that--maybe drastically.

Olivia Lewis (Corvallis) is the 11th best 300M hurdler in the country (among seniors) and she's coming to MSU
Ryan Harrington (GFH) is top 70 in the 800 and 3200 and he's coming to MSU.
Nash Coley (Gallatin) is a top 10 senior in the 300H and he's coming to MSU.
Taylee Chirrick (Roberts) is top 100 in the 300H and she's going to be at MSU for hoops, but hopefully she can run some.
Jack Murray (Gallatin) is only a junior and is top 5 in his class in the discus, and I believe his dad played football for MSU--hopefully we can get him.

If these kids pan out for MSU track, every one of them could be All-Americans.
