Coach Walker jumped on the show to talk about his path to Bozeman, and of course what to expect this fall. It was a fun interview and we're excited to see what he can bring to the table.

Thought I’d give a shoutout to Zack Lavier who has branded Brick Ball as part of the podcast. He just interviewed Keaton Gillogly that hit both basketball and football topics.

Those are the only 3 helmets we should have. No other mixing and matching and the helmet has to match the rest of the uniform of course.

I loved the discussion. I also agree on the throwbacks. If the Cats don't come out against the Griz in November with sweet 1984 throwbacks on..... considering it's 40 years after the last National Championship, something's wrong in the universe.
Great time to be a BOBCAT!

Re: R&R Cat Cast - New Bobcat Fan Podcast
As always, well done fellas. My thoughts on a couple of your takes.
When it comes to lethargy - I am in the same boat as you. I had a hard time caring post December. However, my issue is the transfer portal, and a bit of the disappointment of the 2023 season.
College football is becoming the minor leagues of the NFL. The Power 4 is AAA, G5 and the top of the FCS is AA and rest of FCS is single A/Rookie League. It's becoming harder to care about the sport in general with "free agency" being a thing. It's becoming about the money. Valdez is a great example. If he wasn't going to get NIL money from UW, does he leave? Sure, he's doing a post grad program at a pretty fantastic school, but I doubt he goes if he doesn't get a 6 figure NIL deal.
I'm not getting tired of being good and coming up short. I'm disappointed that we had a championship caliber team who really underachieved last year. We couldn't get out of our own way, and a crappy end to the year left me with a sour taste. I was disappointed in the ending of the 2022 season as well, but it wasn't nearly as sour. If we were winning championships like NDSU, no way in hell would I be missing games because of lethargy, but I'm sure some would. Definitely had some apathy creep in though.
I think Tommy throws for 2500 + yards this year and has 3100 + yards of total offense.
Idaho and the Cat/Griz game are the only TOP issues. Too many 3 and outs and this will happen though. Idaho went for it on 4th and converted too much that game, which helped them maintain TOP. The Cats are a big play team, so we are never going to really control TOP. Wanting YPP to decrease and fewer explosive plays is wild
Being able to sustain meaningful drives is important though.
The 2023 offense is the best rated offense in the last 15 years in the FCS, you don't think an even better offense this year would be one of the best ever in the FCS? Defense was the name of the game prior to the early 2000s in all levels of football.

I'm not as doomer as many on here about the portal/minor league issue. The current era of the Bobcats is the best they've been in my lifetime and maybe ever. Most of that is related to the strength of the program and the school overall, not the watered down version of the FCS.BleedingBLue wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 1:29 pmAs always, well done fellas. There were a lot of disappointing endings to games and as disappointed as I was that we were one and done in the playoffs, by Sunday or Monday I was determined to look on the bright side about the season as a whole. Winning road games against top 10 teams (or any game against NDSU) is really hard no matter who you are and we were really close in 3 of them. A couple things go differently here and there and we win all 3. No apathy on my part. I'm looking forward to the breaks going our way this year and hitting on all cylinders in December.
The reason you want to control TOP and draw out offensive drives is to 1) keep the ball away from the other team and 2) give your defense a chance to rest. Our offense is good enough than 1) isn't a concern and our defense hasn't had the troubles it had under previous coaches keeping up with the offense. I don't see a need to change anything. Just run the plays and if they turn into 50 yard TDs, hope the defense gets a stop and go out there and do it again.

I have a harder time with the portal and it becoming like the minor leagues because college football has always been my favorite sport. It's selfish I'm sure, but I enjoyed when young men were playing the game because they loved it, and it could provide them a free education. I have no issue with guys capitalizing on NIL, but between that and the portal it's out of hand. We ring our hands for a few weeks every year now wondering which of our top guys are going to leave. Sure we get some nice additions coming our way, but the portal is worse than free agency, because nobody in college sports has entered into a contract with their schools, similar to how professional athletes do. Free agency isn't a free for all like the portal is.coloradocat wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 2:00 pmI'm not as doomer as many on here about the portal/minor league issue. I agree. It sure seems like the NCAA and Congress never put any thought into the possibility that the system would get overturned and now it's a free for all because the NCAA is essentially powerless and Congress is afraid of bad PR (from a demographic that doesn't vote anyway). I'm sure they could come up with a constitutional way to re-introduce structure if they really wanted to.BleedingBLue wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 3:05 pmI have a harder time with the portal and it becoming like the minor leagues because college football has always been my favorite sport.
